bike sizing

I have been looking at a new Bianchi Volpe. I am 5'8" tall with 29" inseam. A 52cm Volpe would be recommended. The new Volpe has a 9 speed cassette with a triple crank. MSRP is about $1100.00. I have come across a 50cm 1997 Volpe for $325.00 on craigs list. Looks to be in pretty good shape. Has a 7 speed cassette with a triple crank. Can I make the 50cm work by changing stems-etc or will it just be too small? Any thoughts? Thanks!

I would think that it'll be too small. If you want to save money by buying used, just try and stay patient and wait for something in your size to come up, though I know that's a hard thing to do when you have the bike jones going!

Yeah, that bike jones thing has me by the neck and won't let go. Seriously though, I just came from my LBS and tried a 49cm Tricross sport and it was deffinately too small--52 was just right. They didn't have a Volpe in my size and would not be getting any more in. Liked the Trisport ok-- price was a bit high-- $1125.00, but will keep it in mind.
