Mystery of the Metal Pylons solved
For the last couple of weeks I've been noticing these metal pylons situated in a vacant lot along my commute. They weren't close enough that I could see what they were but I was mildly curious as day by day I saw their numbers increase.
Imagine my surprise when I spot a row of them on the street next to our building as I head out for lunch today. Attached to one end is what looked like will be a lighted sign. I just had to take a closer peek and what do you know? It turns out that the pylons are part of a parking station for Minnesota's new bike share system: niceridemn.org.

Are they intended to be poking out into the street? How long until the lot of them gets sideswiped by a texting driver?

June 10th I guess is when the actual bikes will be available
I was wondering that myself though it's not quite as bad as it looks. The white stripe on the street in the picture is the right edge of a bike lane, so there's a little more of buffer than what you see.

I hope it works out but somehow I think a lot of bikes will end up being a fad bike and sold on Ebay shipped to Japan like they are having problems with in other countries. .
I think it is France where they have to replace close to half the bikes every year from theft and damage on a simular venture.

I hope it works too but I'm not sure I understand who they're targeted towards. Most people who want to use a bike already have one. The downtown area isn't so big that you can't walk to wherever you'd want to go. It might be nice for people visiting downtown to be able to grab a bike and head towards the lakes but you have to know where you're going. When they complete the last leg of the cedar lake trail, which will run right by my building, then it'll be an easier trip.
Personally if I'm visiting a strange city, I'm much more comfortable on foot than on a bike unless they have *really* good cycling infrastructure.
