three good events in one trip
Yesterday afternoon when I was leaving to ride to my girlfriends place my neighbors stopped me to ask a few questions. They'd been asking me questions about riding earlier in the year after she thought it would be a good idea if they bought bicycles, and she'd been riding hers enough to want to tell me about some of the places she's been to and ask me a few questions about how to put a water bottle cage on her bike. We talked for a little while and I told her to let me know if I could help her put in on later.
About 5 minutes later as I was riding down the MUP I saw this guy in a motorized wheelchair coming towards me. It seemed like he was wanting to play chicken at first as he kept to the center of the path, and then he turned around to face me again. I stopped to try and figure out what he was doing, and it turns out one of the wheels that keeps him from falling over if the chair tips too far to the front had fallen out, and he was looking for help picking it up. He had some sort of congenital condition that kept him from being able to reach down and pick up the pieces, so I put the wheel and the bolt that went with it where his Dad could find them and put them on after they got another nut to hold them in place. I would have put the wheel back on if we could have found the nut, but it was nowhere to be found.
And then when I was going through a big park I noticed that the little girl out riding with her Mom was wearing one of the helmets we'd given away the past few springs. Mom and Daughter both said she liked the helmet and wears it whenever she rides her bike, and both of them thanked me for giving it to her.
All in all it was a pretty good ride, and definitely wouldn't have happened if I'd taken the car instead.
