New wheels for CX commuter
I've been looking for wheels for a cx frame I bought. I plan on using it for (unladen) commuting and on-off road weekend rides. Anyone have any experience with Shimano WH-500 or Xero CXR-330 wheels. I have a rather restricted budget. Thanks

Find out whoever has the "deal-of-the-week" on 32 spoke, Ultegra/Open Pros. Right now, Performance and Colorado Cyclist have 'em for around $370, which is a little on the high side. With a little patience, you should be able to get a set for $275ish. As Shimano hubs are loose bearing, check bearing adjustment before putting into service. For whatever reason, they are often adjusted a little tight, and if too tight, you will prematurely lunch a cone. Otherwise, expect years of dependable service.
Just looked and Pricepoint has them for $265. Only downside, in my opinion, is alloy nipples. My preference is tried and true brass nipples for everyday wheels.

Whats the spacing on the back? I just picked up a set of CR18 on Deore hubs for $80 rear $60 front and REI satisfaction guarantee. Put a hundred on mine so far...need to run them by to have the tension checked (as a precaution) but they have been good so far.

Thanks. I actually saw that ad, and was wanting to use Deore, but rear spacing on my frame is 130 (2008 Volpe). If I could find the CR-18s laced to Tiagra or 105 hubs, I'd be a happy camper...er... biker.

VO use to sell a 105 laced to a CR18. They stopped carring them when they brought out the rims with their label on them. I have not heard any reveiws on the VO rim. It looks nice. I would not hesitate to use them on a Road bike but I am not sure they are suited to off road. They are a 36spoke so thats a big plus on the strength department. Little more cash then REI but still in your budget range.

Hold on a second! They have two rims. The second listed as a triple box like the CR18 same price.
