If the salmon rider crashes and burns, do we get" smoked salmon". Yes. you can quote me on the phrase of the day. If the ninja salmon rider crashes and burns, do we get cooked sushi?

Come to think of it, I'm a bike salmon sometimes. There's a turn in my neighborhood where a cyclist should only ever be on the left end of the street. Mind you, the street is one lane, period, and when there's oncoming traffic, one car is expected to yield into the parking lane. Anyway, this ends at a 90 degree angle to the next street, and a wall blocks all visibility. People turning from the main street onto this one almost never slow down; they just assume it'll be empty. I've seen many cyclists narrowly avoid getting hit because they were where they were supposed to be. So, I ride on the left end of the road as I approach the turn, to give myself as much visibility and as much time to avoid a crash, as possible.

I used to be a salmon and a bike ninja. The only reason I was was because I did not know better. I was thought to ride against traffic so I can see oncoming cars and I thought that reflectors were more than enough for night riding. Once I started to read up on traffic laws concerning bicycles and a few close calls with cars that didn't see me my method of riding and amount of lighting on the bike changed.

Now, I'm just as arrogant as the rest of you all.

I salmoned for about one mile of my 4 mile commute yesterday. Likelihood of my meeting another cyclist on that stretch of road on a rainy day is less than one percent and traffic on the 4-lane road was quite heavy, so I just salmoned 'til there was a break in auto traffic so I could get on the correct side.

Been a long time since I ninja'd. I typically have at least one, sometimes two backup headlights. I currently only roll with one tail blinky, hopefully I'll get that back to two before the really early nightfalls begin.

But, yeah salmon are a pain unless they get out of the way before a meet. I really don't care if someone salmons as long as they take the sidewalk or the auto traffic lane before we meet.

Night salmon are downright scary!

I think the salmon in the USA are simply english language pedantics or anglophiles driving on the RIGHT (that is left) side of the road! They probably don't understand your cries of "WTF MF!!!"... try "Jolly bad show old fellow!"

There is one thing about the salmon practice here that I think is wrong, if you are the salmon you are expected to hug the kerb, the downstream swimmers go wide into the traffic. That seems the wrong way around to me.

Same, in The States I ride correctly for the states, in China I ride correctly for China. They are not the same. There are times i will push the rules here in the states and ride with a focus on convience for me rather than blind adherence to the law. And the same, in China I tend to ride faster than the typical cyclist. Overall, I guess I ride with a blend of the two styles.

I do remember that, as a kid, my mother insisted that I ride against traffic. However, even as a kid, it was obviously wrong.

Nicely explicated about common knowledge that is often wrong.
Heck, many motorists don't realize there are bike rules (much less, what the rules provide), and as we've seen described in these forums repeatedly, too many law enforcement personnel don't know what's required/allowed.

First, nice job GriddleCakes...

Second I have to fully agree with Seamless here... not only are the laws and methods not being made "common," but those folks that have the information to pass on (LCIs et. al.) tend to do so only at private "tupperware" type parties that the clueless have to seek.

Bike shops should offer said training... elementary schools should offer said training. Billboards on the streets should tell cyclists as much as road signs tell motorists. We really do FAIL in this country in telling cyclists and other road users, where and how cyclists fit into the big picture.

Thank you very much for those who answered the question. I have suspected that ignorance was the problem and it was with the former salmon who posted. I wish that Bike manufacturers would add a "Keep to the right" sticker along with the "wear a helmet sticker" that we see on every bike. For the rest of you, I hope you thoroughly enjoyed my malaprop and all the fish jokes. May the "scales" of justice prevail and you share Luca Brasi's fate!

When a word is loosed from its original moorings, as it were, it tends to revert to standardized usage. Thus the baseball team is Marlins, not Marlin; one of the Marlins flied out to end the inning, not flew out. AdamDZ is perfectly fine with Salmons. QED.

I only ninja salmon while riding helmetless with no hands (so I can juggle knives) on my bike that has the JB weld steering tube extension. Oh, and I wave/nod to everyone on the other side.

I did about three blocks salmon style at lunch today. The left turn lane from a divided road into the Costco/BK/Panda center is blocked and has a 1/2 mile detour, so I salmoned up said divided road to the Panda Express.

+1, except that my bike's steerer tube is carbon.

Actually, I ride salmon-style every morning. The streets at the corner where I live are both one-way, and taking either of them the legally correct direction is the wrong direction from going to work. So, I ride the forty yards or so the wrong direction, then I turn onto the next street and ride in the direction of traffic.

In my wild carefree youth (mid-thirties) I used to go out Ninja-ing every once in a while with a couple friends. We'd fill our water bottles with beer, stuff a couple more in pockets for refills and go riding around the city in the middle of the night. We knew it was a bit dangerous, but that was sort of the point. It was a lot of fun. Can't claim ignorance, though stupidity might cover it. And of course we didn't bother with helmets.

Hahaha. Yes, it's pretty brutal, but my only rideable lunch options are the Taco Truck, the Panda, BK, Wendy's and Weinerchnitzel.

Taco Truck is my usual haunt, but I can't do it 5 days a week.

for me that sounds like the perfect reason to bring leftovers 4 days a week and taco truck once a week, but that's just me. And yes, I'm aware that unless you have super roomy panniers, bringing leftovers can be a PITA.
