Goals for 2011?
I work with another dedicated cyclist. He commutes to work just about as much as I do. Both of us work at a Marriott Hotel, so I proposed an idea to him. I'm calling it the "Marriott Challenge." What it is, is that each of us from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011... we will bike to work everyday. For emergencies we are allowing ourselves eight "mulligans," which means we can use eight days the whole year to drive our vehicles in. That's obviously less than one day a month. We live in Maine, so we will be dealing with all four seasons and the extremes that go with them.
Has anyone else set any goals in mind? I know it's still September, but we are heading into the twilight of this season, and I was wondering if anyone else had any goals for 2011?

Thinking about doing 8000km of commuting in the upcoming year. Was the goal I set for 2010 as well, but am coming pretty close to either failing or succeeding.
Besides that I'm thinking about doing more recreational cycling. Metric centuries, training rides of 80km, hillclimbing and am thinking about the Amstel Gold Race touring ride. Seems like a nice ride to start off my touring 'career'.

I did the bike to work everyday thing one year. I made it but it was irritating, there were 3 or 4 days in the year that I really should have driven for various reasons.
I don't set goals anymore, I just ride my bike.

You guys sound like good candidates for the Commuter Cycling Century Challenge (the CCCC) over on BikeJournal.com. BikeJournal is an online ride log. The free version lets you track your rides, hours, miles, and a couple of other things. The paid version (US$20/year) adds all sorts of other statistics you may want to collect about your travels. Both versions also track chains, tires and other equipment and maintenance.
As for the ride log itself, I have a paid account and my privacy settings set for public view. I've configured my ride log with the things I want to track and the the way I want to track them. Yours will likely look different. NOTE: My usual online name, brucew, was already taken when I joined BikeForums. So don't look for tsl there, look for brucew instead.
My BikeJournal Profile
My BikeJournal Ride Log
The CCCC is a separate thread within the BikeJournal community. The goal is to commute by bike 100 days in the calendar year. There are currently 81 commuters in the challenge, worldwide. I have 152 commuting days to date, and I'm one of eight with a "PCY" (Perfect Commuting Year) so far in 2010. Another CCCC abbreviation you'll also see in my ride log is MDAS, for "Most Direct And Safe" route.

I'm still working on this year's goals.
One goal I failed to achieve this year was doing a short tour between Jasper and Banff, Alberta, so that will get deferred to next year.

One thing you should clarify in your rules is whether accepting a ride home is a mulligan.
Now that I think about I have a few goals:
1. Never allow bike commuting to interfere with my duties as a husband and father.
2. Ride everyday, unless conflicts with goal number 1. Never let the weather prevent me from riding.
3. Complete a multi-day tour.
A few comments. (1) is obviously a balancing act between my wife and myself. She is pretty much on board with me commuting every day. I need to be OK with missing a few days/year to accomodate her. One could argue, and my wife has, that riding in really bad weather could conflict with (1), although I think I have demonstrated I can ride safely year round. Regarding (3), I tried this over the summer, but had to turn around due to 80 mph winds on Trail Ridge Road.

I don't have any commuting goals other than to do it as often as possible and to arrive safely each time. My commute is really easy. 8 miles RT of flat, relatively well paved streets. No snow or freezing temperatures. My biggest hazard is the tule fog of January/February.
I tip my hat to the hard core commuters of BF. You guys inspire me.

2011 Goals? Stop buying more bikes and just use the one I got!
Yeah, I hear ya. That Tule fog in the Delta, Stockton up to Sacramento is thick as pea soup. Careful riding out there.

This pretty much sums up my philosophy as well. However, whatever motivates you is fine. Is there any reward for the guy who wins? Will the guy who wins get taken out to dinner, or do you play for keeps; the guy who wins gets the other persons bike. That's how we do it in the hood..., okay, maybe not, I just wanted to sound internet tough.

My goal for 2010 was 3,000 commuter miles. I've only got about 600 miles left to go to attain that goal this year. I already ride practically every day I work w/ almost no exceptions, so getting a lot more commuter miles isn't really that feasible.
I think my main goal for next year will be to ride more miles generally. This year so far, over 90% of my miles are from commuting. I'd love to get in more weekend fun rides and finally get in a couple short bike camping/bike touring trips, even if just overnighters. Total miles along the lines of 5,000 overall for the year???
Oh, and ride those miles on an LHT frame (to be purchased at the end of the year [w/ a little help from Santa]). Bye bye Target hybrid! I've upgraded and fixed you about as much as I can. You are so 2009 and 2010. 2011 is a Surly year! ;-)
My most important cycling goal, though, is to HAVE FUN!!!

After my last car was totaled I decided to go car free. I really have no choice to drive to work. But I do use public transportation along with bikes.
My goal is to stick with it. And also complete a 50 mile ride by june, and a 100 mile ride by next december.

+1 to tsl on the CCCC on bikejournal.com. I'm also one of the eight there who hasn't missed a day commuting by bike in 2010 and only missed two half days in 2009. I have a little bit better weather overall riding in the DC metro area than you will in Maine.

To ride most of the winter here in Michigan, snow and all. Could be some icy/heavy snow days that I skip, but I'm gearing up for all the equipment to ride in any kind of weather.

My thoughts on 2011 are firstly to still be riding in January 2011. I want to make this the first winter that I went 100% by bicycle. I also want to do a round trip trip between Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska some weekend (may yet do that this year). Also I would like to participate in as many cycling events in the city as I can next year, even if I have to take time off work. Also I would like to do some finishing touches on my city bike (new generator and better lights).

My goal is simply to commute as much as possible by bike, and to generally eliminate most of the in-town miles I put on my car. I suppose a better way of putting it is that I would like to limit trips in my car to only 1-2 per week. I'm at about 3 right now (usually 1 day of driving to work and a couple or errands on the weekend), and I'd like to lower that number.
Riding more miles than driving would be nearly impossible for me as I use my car on weekend trips a lot, where I'll rack on several hundred miles in a day or two. But, I can eliminate most of my in town trips pretty easily as I live only a few miles from both work and everything else I need. I have nothing against my car, but I like the weight I'm loosing by cycling everywhere, and the fact that I pick up a lot of extra exercise without much extra time spent compared to driving everywhere.

In the right lane
When I started commuting, I was doing 3 bikes commutes a week. The next year my goal was to do 4 days on average. The next year... it was five.
I'm up to 8 days a week right now.
