I actually remember predictions back when I was a kid that we'd be out of oil before the turn of the century. Of course we made it past that. I'm not much of a doom and gloomer but that doesn't mean we won't have to make some serious adjustments.

3. Eating less meat will absolutely reduce our use of oil. Expect meat to become quite expensive once peak oil really sets in. No more 99 cent cheeseburgers, that's for sure.
Family farms were producing most of the meat we ate until relatively recently and going back to some of those practices is not impossible. My point is that meat production isn't the problem. You could easily point at modern electronics that require a medium sized powerplant just to operate in "sleep" mode. It's everything. We need to look at everything we do and not point fingers at particular industries. Energy right now is cheap. So we don't give a second thought to plugging in yet another appliance/gizmo or driving a little bit farther.

And yes, you can get all your nutritional needs met from plants but you have to be much more careful. Many vegetarians are anemic. It's easier to get your iron requirements from red meat.

Exactly. I still remember the gloom and doom talks about what would happen if oil reached $40/bbl, or (heavens forbid) $50/bbl! We seemed to have rolled through that one just fine. As for peak oil, I think it'll finally encourage us to look earnestly for alternative sources of energy. Something we've needed to do for a long time, but didn't because cheap oil existed.

I wouldn't call the worst recession since 1929 "rolling through just fine". Maybe you got through it just fine, but many of us aren't doing too well. And if we have reached peak oil, this is just the very first taste of what the future holds.

I don't remember oil playing a major role in the financial crisis. Yeah, it doesn't help, I know, but the current recession wasn't caused by high oil prices.

With everything inter-related, who can say what role the oil crisis played. There was, after all, an oil crisis, and it did occur at the same time as the recession. Coincidence? Maybe. But as you say, it didn't help. The oil crisis abated when the recession really hit home. Typical post-peak behaviour, similar to that illustrated by Jeff Rubin in his book 'Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller'. Rubin was one of the first economists to accurately predict soaring oil prices back in 2000 and is now one of the world’s most sought after energy experts. He makes a very good argument at https://www.jeffrubinssmallerworld.co...gical-concept/
