This should be interesting.
1. It isn't the OP's bike and the seller freaks out about the situation.
2. It is the OP's bike and the seller freaks out about the situation.
3. It is the OP's bike and the seller lurks on the site here and swaps out the s/n sticker or substitutes a different bike or says the bike just sold 5 minutes before the OP got there.
4. It is the OP's bike and the seller plays dumb about it being his cousin's bike who needs tuition money for Northwestern law school.

Relatively nice, but there are a couple of rental houses in the area that attract groups of college students, who tend to be looking at houses because they've been kicked out of student housing for too many loud parties and/or public intoxication arrests. That translates to a fair number of drunks peeing in the yards at 3AM, driving across the lawn when they miss the corner, ( https://kd5nrh.smugmug.com/photos/699106061_FUuWD-M.jpg ) stealing anything that's not nailed down ( https://kd5nrh.smugmug.com/photos/672368396_tZ9V7-M.jpg ) and breaking into cars when they can't find anything that's not nailed down. ( https://kd5nrh.smugmug.com/Journalism...09_6oygE-M.jpg )
There's a rental duplex across the street from me and there've been both good and bad tenants of all ages, but the young college-age people have been consistently bad. At least the drug dealer mowed the lawn and didn't throw beer bottles into the street.

Your post just made me check again on my bike (stolen almost a month ago) and guess what? posted last night! Idiot didn't even have the decency to take off the fenders, bell or the unusual bar ends.
Trying to get through to the cops (I did file a report!)

Sorry this thread is at the expense of you guys BUT. This is better than watching LOST. Please update. I can see it now a new reality show....."Jack My Bike" . The Police get kudos for aggressively going after bike crooks and real Police departments all over the country start to crack down on bike theft..... Okay I'm going to take two aspirin and shut up now.

Not my helmet -- I had that with me at work :-)
We'll see what comes of the detective's attempt to recover it. the cop has allegedly made contact with the seller through a 'fictitious' e-mail address.
And yeah -- a great deal for a nice bike that only it's father could love - complete with my cheap bell, drop bar ends, ugly MTB fenders ('custom' cut to fit!), shimano 520 pedals, headlight and taillight mounts (I still have the lights!) :-) I wonder where my tailbag with the patch kit and tire levers has gone, though?

Thanks -- Me too!
The detective seemed pretty hot to trot - esp. once he saw the listing and matched it to my description in the report :-)
Idiot is even claiming it was bought new, which will hurt him a lot if he feigns innocence -- I'm on pretty good terms with the owners of the LBS where it was purchased new (not by me). They know that it was stolen, to whom it was originally sold, and that I am the second owner - I had it serviced by them the week before it was jacked. And they like me even better because they sold me my replacement!
I am really hoping they get him -- at least to charge him with criminal stupidity. I guess he thought I'd have given up by now... and he was ~almost~ right.

Okay - -just to close the (unhappy) loop: the posting was deleted last night, so I e-mailed the detective to see if he managed to make contact. The thief never responded to his e-mail, so I guess someone else got a really good deal on my bike.
I'm half considering filing a civil suit just so I can take advantage of subpoena power and try to ID the perp, but I think I'd get frustrated and give up long before I got anything useful, esp. as he most likely used an anonymous e-mail address and public internet access. Maybe, if I'm really lucky, the new owner will turn up here, so at least I can congratulate him on his new ride. I don't hold anything against the purchaser... I don't think there's any way to know that it was a stolen bike from the listing. I just wish I had responded directly to the perp as soon as I saw the listing... perhaps I'd have had better luck. :-/

Detective should be able to go through CL and get the pertinent information. They're pretty good about supplying it to LEO's. At minimum should be able to get IP which can be traced back, as can the email that the CL was forwarded to.

I was thinking much the same, but I suspect that is more work than the Det. is willing to do for a $500 bike. :-/

I had this happen to me when I was a kid (19 yrs. ago... where did all that time go?) and this chick stole my guitar and amp out of my parked car. Found it for sale in the local paper a couple months later. Called the cops, was told to go verify it which I did with my mother. Told the girl I wanted to buy it and we were going to the bank to get the money out and would be back shortly. We went to the PD, then back to her place, paid her the money as the police waited just around the corner. They went in and got her, took my items, and gave us the money back.
Long story short, she had so many outstanding court dates on more major offenses that this case really never went anywhere. Believe it was over 2 yrs. of my items sitting at the PD and they just randomly called me out of nowhere to go and pick it up because it was taking up too much space.

That would mean the man did not steal the bikes, but bought stolen bikes, whether he knew they were stolen or not. Why did they arrest him instead of try to catch whoever sold the bikes to him? (Even though, given that he has modified many bikes, he likely had guessed, rightly, that they were stolen items.)

My genius didn't bother making any modifications, but he waited almost 30 days... which was just about right for me to have given up... Of course, if the cops had recovered my bike, I wonder how long it would have been before it was returned to me?
Dammit, I liked that bike!
