Yeah, the Rohloff is awful steep. Does anyone have an opinion of the 3 and 4 speed hubs Shimano makes? I was thinking maybe the 3 speed hub would be more bombproof due to less complexity?

O.K. I rode some 4600KM (3000 miles) that year but 1,5 months for the inter-8 is not acceptable.

The only question is - what are the alternatives.
I don't want to spend 800 bucks on a Rohloff.

It seems to me that if you are going through shimano hubs at that rate, the Rohloff might, in fact, end up being very cost effective despite the high inititial investment. Of course this is true only if the Rohloff's legendary reliability is not a fable.

That's what I'm concerned about. He's a hard rider and the Nexus 7 is as tough as they come. I don't have any problems on mine but then again, I'm not hard on the equiptment. I would pass on the Rohloff and go to a 3 speed by Sturmey Archer. Mine has been practically indestructable.

You can always go single speed.

I think the first question is why are you going through so many Nexus 7s? Is it shock loads from curbs or potholes, or is it overstressing the unit through high torque -- i.e., lots of mashing up very steep hills.

If it is a hill issue, then neither the singlespeed nor the Sturmley Archer option may work. The choices would then come down to Rohloff or derailleur.
