Magicshine Batteries to be Recalled by Geoman

I know I bought my Magicshine for my commute so I'm cross-posting, but I was disappointed to get the news. Conversely, must compliment Geoman on the customer service.

Thread here.

Yeah, I have bought four in the past couple of months. Two just died suddenly. Third one holds maybe about an hour of charge. Geoman already issued an RMA, too bad they have no replacements now.

Hrmm.... I wonder how they'll treat my battery... I just hacked the pack apart and soldered the two good cells back together into a lower runtime pack so I could use my light.

Greeeat... I just bought my light set a couple weeks ago. Does anybody know where I can get a good deal on a replacement battery pack? I can't be without my light while they try to figure out what they're going to do.

Only one of my MS batteries became unusable over the summer, the rest are working fine. Fortunately, I have a couple of DiNotte batteries as backups, but I'm still going to keep using the MS batteries until they are no longer usable.

Are any other battery packs compatible? I love the light and havent had any problems with mine so far. Is this just a matter of cells failing?

Arrg, I bought mine from DX a few weeks ago (still waiting for delivery). Should've heeded the warnings.

Given all the problems I see people having on here (dying batteries, needing to do homebrew waterproofing, the occasional charger failing, etc.) I can't say this is surprising. I generally got the impression that the MagicShines weren't very good quality lights, they're just popular because they're cheap and bright.

For those doubters in this thread, the Magicshine is still a great product. I purchased a secondary battery earlier this year (GeoMan) and it has performed flawlessly - it's not held together with rubber bands and scotch tape as the tone of this thread may suggest. I will return the battery if I need to, but of all the lights I've used, this is by far the superior choice for the dollar.

If you stopped buying all cycling-related products because they had an issue, you wouldn't be riding a bike. You still see Toyotas, don't you?

I have not received an email from Geomangear yet, but I'll stop using it for now. I've had no problems and do love the MS. I hope the issue is resolved fairly quickly.

I bought one last september along with an extra battery. Everything worked flawlessly (even in some rain) until about a week ago when one of the batteries could no longer hold its charge overnight. I still feel the light is one of my best bike-related purchases and have no regrets.

Since my email address changed after my purchase (and my old email address hadn't received the notice anyways when I went back and checked), I sent geoman an email with my order number, date of purchase and updated contact information yesterday and received a reply just several hours later telling me they've updated their records with the new email address, copy of their previous email notice, etc... Their customer service is really good.

Hmm. I sent a message to them with my order # yesterday via the contact form on the website. Still have not received any communication from them. Just tried replying to my original order email with a request for recall information.

What is the battery voltage for the Magicshine lights? Are they 2 cell lithium packs wired in series? I'd like to buy the light and supply my own batteries.

The one I got did not appear to be held together by much of anything at all. Yes, other manufacturers have problems, but there's no getting around that the MS light is cheaply made, with little or no quality control. Getting a good one seems to be mainly a matter of luck.

The email basically says this:
https://www.geomangear.com/index.php?...dex&cPath=4_41

Note that only Magicshine lithium-ion battery packs sold by Geomangear between July 2009 and November 2010 appear to be affected, though they do mention light sets bought from them between June 2009 and November 2010.

I got my email. Hotmail thought it was junk, so I found it in my junk folder. From what I read, it doesn't look like they're asking us to send back the old battery, they're just saying not to use it, and they're working on a replacement solution.

No, but they'd like you to think they are. They have a fake UL mark on them. A real UL mark has enough information that you can look up the item, and figure out who's responsible for it. Fake ones don't.

I ordered two of these. I should have them in a day or two. They're the same thing, only packed differently and not waterproof. They may even have the same connector. They also have a more expensive version with brand-name cells. This one has generic cells, so may be about the same quality as MS batteries. Had I found them sooner I'd probably have ordered the more expensive ones.
