Of the various bike parts that I've broken over the years, spokes are one that I've never managed to mangle (oh god, I just jinxed myself). Closest experience to this was the time I broke a chain, taking off from a red light. Only then I didn't land on my feet, I landed on my top tube. I had to drag myself off of the road and just breath for a bit before I was able to bust out the chain tool and stitch everything back together so that I could ride home. The Lady G'Cakes was with me, and if I recall correctly the conversation went something like this:

Lady G'Cakes: Are you OK?
Me: No.
Lady G'Cakes: Is there anything I can do?
Me: Start seriously considering adoption.

One thing that has happened to me... in the lowest ring and mashing, a piece of the hub cracks and can't hold the lockring... very unpleasant ride home. No beer on board.

was it particularly cold when it happened? (only because that might suggest the metal was more brittle)

Wow...that's a first for me, too! I've never seen nor heard of this happening either. G'Cakes must lay down the torque like a high-speed electric motor! Scared of you, bro...kudos!
