Clamp-On Seat Post Racks For A Road Bike

I ride this and I need a rack for it on a budget. I did a little bit of research and came across these two...

https://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Cling-S.../dp/B0014UMU5S

https://www.ebikestop.com/axiom_odyss...ver-RK6617.php

...I don't know if the second one will fit with my post or not. I'm open to any suggestions for a rack around the $30 price range. Also, I need the side bars because I plan on using a saddle bag with it.

Thanks!

you might want to reconsider the beam rack deal.

instead maybe something from Carousel Design Works:

I'd opt instead for some vinyl-coated P-clips to attach around the aluminum at the very bottom of the seatstays and connect the top attachment of the rack to the brake attachment bolt. That would let you use a regular rack that wouldn't put such a cantilevered load on the seatpost and also wouldn't be prone to rotating and letting the saddlebags (panniers) get into your wheel.

I don't think that would fit my seat post. Also, where are the side bars on the link? Is it a separate piece?

The side bars are seperate piece that attaches to the Topeak beam rack. It's a nice item. I have the exact model shown above by 10Wheels. I'm not using mine so PM me if you're interested.

If you clamp them down real good then they don't move much at all but they do have a little shifting side to side if you are out of the saddle stomping. For a super road bike like you have it's a good option. The nicest thing about it is that it takes the Topeak MTX racks that slide into a channel and click in/out with ease.

I've been doing without it and using a backpack for commuting because I wanted to charge around doing interval training on the way home etc and the rack on the back felt weird. Now I'm over it and have lights and fenders all over so a rack would be a good next step for winter commuting with all the stuff I have to carry.

Why wouldn't it fit on your seatpost? There are two sizes of shims for the clamp for road and mtn sizes. The ones you listed above look very cheap at the clamp.

P clips will work on bikes that don't have dedicated eyelets to accept racks. With them, any standard rack will work.

I have an earlier model of the same rack. It works well with my Topeak trunk bag that is designed for it. I don't have the side brackets.

Three observations:

1. Rotation on the seat post is the first challenge to overcome. I replaced the slippery Topeak-provided shim with a cut section of thick MTB inner tube. The inner tube shim eliminates most rotation as long as I tighten it with care.

2. My thighs sometimes contact the quick release. It's not a real problem, but can be a little annoying. Maybe the new model QR is more compact.

3. I wouldn't put too much weight in the tunk bag. The weight is up high and it changes the balance of the bike, and the inertia will increase the potential for rotation. Rotation will be a more serious concern with the pannier brackets installed. I think you could also damage a lightweight seat post.

The rack is great for bringing a change of clothes to work or running a light errand with a lock and a few lightweight items. I have a heavy utility bike with a full rack for when I need to carry a lot, but this rack lets me ride my "nice" road bike to work with a change of clothes, and leave the rack at work for a faster and more sporty ride home through the hills.

I bought a cheap one from Performance several years ago when my roadie was my only rig. Easy to take off for fun rides, able to put a pannier on it for commuting. Loved it and eventually passed it on to a new commuter I converted. I think he has since passed it on.

You don't want to do that.

I bought an Axiom rack which had a huge clamp that didn't clear my thighs. Then I bought a Topeak rack which worked, but had side frames too flimsy to keep paniers out of my spokes. Then I bought I Blackburn Post Porter Quick release, which still had clearance issues on the clamp. Then I bought a Transit rack from the local Performance which was a bit better than the Blackburn but still not usable. The total price here is past $100.

Then I gave up and used P-clamps to mount a rack which had been attached to a "comfort" bike gathering dust in the garage. That didn't work well because after ~100 dry miles or 10 in the rain the bottom clamps would slide down front seat stays to drop-outs where the drive side one made it impossible to get into the small cog. So I added hose clamps beneath the bottom P-clamps. $10 and a thousand miles later it still works great.

Some time I'll get around to having a local frame builder weld eyelets on.

With plastic (aka Carbon fiber) seat-stays you want to use a skewer mount for the bottom plus a seat-post clamp or brake bridge mount for the top.

seat post Must be metal. if you bought a CF seatpost pull it out and set it aside .
buy a metal one aluminum or steel, to clamp those seat post beams on.

There are bags that fit on the seat post too with a hoop support.
if you have modest load carrying goals.

Let me point out another option.
I just tried my first bar bag recently. Other then having to use a bungee between the levers to support the nose I really like it. I can clip my Iphone to the top and take hands free calls, listen to tunes or use the GPS (map my ride) while on the go.
