One of my roommates is a self proclaimed bicycle hater....

Anyone vote on what I put in his bed? I know he hates spiders....

In all seriousness he says he hates bikers and that we "never follow any of the rules of the road, pass on the left, never stop for anything and get in the way".

If you haven't already (I'm sure you have) educate yourself on the damage that automobiles do. Not just environmental (this summer's episode in the gulf) & health (cancer) related, which are often 'long-term' concepts that people are horrible at considering, but degrading quality of life in the present, i.e. un-walkable places, sprawling real-estate, burden of parking costs, paid by all strata of society, wars, etc.

The facts are not in your roommates favor. Tell him the facts, but don't be overbearing about it. Anyone who knows the facts cannot logically be in favor of cars.

Yea, so? Don't get in a huff over his feelings. Tell him you hate Clark University.

Ask him how often he is for a parking space in a crowded downtown lot, and manages to snag the very last one, saving himself a long walk. Then explain that he is able to do this because somewhere nearby there was a person chose to ride their bike instead of driving their car.

Finally, point out that the overall amount of walking time saved for him by cyclists who did not take that last parking spot far exceeds any amount of time he spends waiting for cyclists who "get in the way."

Psst...Oil is used in more areas than for just gasoline. Look it up. Our dependent on fossil fuel is of global responsibility. Failing to recognize that reduces one's vision and big picture solution.
Urban sprawl is largely due to the Great American dream of wanting larger homes with large parcel of land. Consumerism is why we are where we are.
Fact is while there are lousy car drivers there are also lousy bikers. It's a no win situation.

I have been biking long enough to know how to hold my own against the likes of him!

But yea he is sort of a typical suburbanite and yet he denies it. I more just have fun poking at him. He also has made some pretty put-downish comments about Africa and then complained that he would have to go there because his fiance is so social justice focused (She used to go to Clark actually...) He is one of those people who is really good at b*tching.

If I need to edge him about anything I can make fun of him for him being out of shape and me not so much

Video him breaking several traffic laws and sitting in a traffic jam on the freeway where cyclist are not allowed, post it on u-tube and leave a link on his computer.

Maybe even put some graphics like "So it is cyclist that break the laws?" "No cyclist allowed, so who is backing up traffic?"

He cares about rules? Car drivers universally fail to follow the rules. All the car drivers I know routinely exceed the speed limit, coast through stop signs, run red lights (by going through intersections or turning left too late), park illegally, fail to signal consistently, and commit many other offences which they excuse themselves for. And ever day I see drivers ignoring the law we have here against cellphone use while driving.

As for bikes getting in the way, oh, really? Sure, maybe one or two. He apparently hasn't noticed the hundreds or thousands of cars that get in his way.

He recently rear-ended someone at a green light because they were too slow, and he proclaims it was her fault

Oh what the hell... I'll do it for you. This is from the DOE:

Again if you have a point other than that "it's a no-win situation" please share.

My gf's (parked) car was just smashed up by a hit and run driver and was almost hit again on the road the very same day by a cager blatently making an illegal lane change.

Yeah, bicycles are the problem.

Transportation. And guess what are being transported? It's not all single occupant suburban soccer moms. Expand your mind a bit.
Hint: How did that keyboard that you typed in got brought to the stores? Or that jug of milk for that matter.

If you still haven't got my point then there is no point in going further.

He sounds self involved. So with that in mind, just point out that for everyone who rides a bike there is one less person trying to take gas from him, but each person who drives is trying to take HIS gas. Each bicyclist on the road means more gas, less traffic congestion and more choices in parking spaces for HIM.
