I had a commute like that one summer. It's not a bad ride but the time it takes affects you. The main problem I experienced was that I needed more sleep. I didn't notice it until I fell asleep in the car one afternoon as I returned from a service call with one of my company's techs -- I didn't even realize that I was falling asleep until the tech punched me to wake me up!!

The company I work for now has a room with a sectional couch in it and a door that can be closed. Sometimes a little 15 minute nap in the afternoon is just the trick.

I commute 24 miles each way right now and do it in abot 1 hour and 15 minutes. I do live in Florida so the weather is not a factor. Good luck. You can do it!!!

I did 35 miles yesterday, it took 5 hours, but I am *Way* better than I was 70 lbs. ago.
Way to go, Jessica. I wish more people would realize that being out of shape is as much a reason they should ride as a reason they shouldn't.

32 miles each way? 64 miles per day? You're looking at over half a century there. That's pretty brave if you can do it, though!

Bike Commute to work is 4 miles roughly on a bike, 10 on a bus. Going home it's 6 miles on the bike, 9 on the bus. The bus doesn't run out as deep into my neck of the woods later into the night.

Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. No one ever thought I could commute 22 miles each way 5 times a week on a Huffy cruiser but I did it with out having riddin a bike for years. I'll admit I did a lot of coasting but as I got stronger I pedaled more and cut down my time and got a better bike until I was making the commute in less and less time. It got to where when someone came in late a lot he would point at me and tell them if I could make it to work on time riding a bike they should be able to.

My point is just go for it and never mind people saying you can't do it or that your crazy for trying. Prove them wrong. Nothing feels better then proving the nay sayers wrong.

Barleyrocket,
I live in Aurora (not too far from Sherwood) and I think you're being humble with your distance (I think its farther, but it may depend on your route). Regardless, a good commute. As I said I live in Aurora, south of Portland, and have commuted a couple of times to my job in Hillsboro (~33 miles, 66rt)). I'm no speedy, so it does take a while. I love the morning part of the commute, seems to go fast without much traffic. The ride home can be long though (traffic, stop lights, etc.).
I have 2 other routes that I drive in part way and bike the rest (15m rt, and 32m rt). The whole black-ice thing worries me sometimes though.

Shannon,
I used to live in Mps/St.LouisPark and did not commute back then. I admire folks like yourself that commute in that weather. Good job!

32 miles in minnesota is not realistic imho, u might want to bus/car some of it and ride the rest. 15 miles is about doable for a daily commute each way, at least for me.

See what I mean. The naysayers will try to psych you out whether they mean to or not.

My advice is don't look at this thread anymore. Then when weather permits and you have the time off to just do a test ride. Take it easy, find something to do at the end when you get out there so you have a longish rest like have lunch and see a movie, and then pedal back. That will help you gage whether you want to do it to work or not. Not someones honest opinion of what they would do.

I live 34 miles by bike from work. I take the bus into the city (Seattle) and ride about 5 miles to work. I do ride home on occasion, more in the summer than now. More often than not at this time of the year, if I want extra mileage I grab a commuter bus that drops me about 7 miles from home.

Most I ever did commuting regularly was about 16 each way on very hilly terrain. It was a serious workout. If you can do 32 miles each way, more power to ya. Nothing's completely impossible and if you really want to do it, you definitely can.

I do 26 miles with some pretty steep hills in even less than 2 hours, when I am in good form..If not hilly, sounds like no challenge to me...Question is how often can you do it...What else occurs in your work day, that would tolerate you doing such..
