For the record, saying I got my first flat with tire liners is still not bad... 1 flat in 4 months, and I don't think there's a tire/tube combo out there that would have fended off a 1" brad nail. They are the difference from getting 1-2 flats a week, to going months without one. For what they cost, I will keep using them, they work really well with cheap Kenda tires.

I don't generally use them because even with cheap tires I still rarely get flats, just no hazards around here. But I have a Nokian studded tire that's starting to have the studs pushed IN to the tire and started to cause flats. I cut up an old decrepit Race Lite, cut the beads off it and cut it into a ribbon and used that as a tire liner for the Nokian. Been working OK for 2 years now.

Hi All, Just wanted to let you know i used the liners on Monday took tuesday off from riding. Tuesday night went to get the bike ready for wed. Commute and the back tire was flat. Now i only had the liner in the back tire since that is where i am getting all my flats. After carefully taking of the tire the only thing i could find where ther leak was was the end of the tape (yes i did sand this very well). So maybe i installed the liner wrong, or maybe it was the liner itself, but i think i will skip using it. I will wait till this tire wears down then purchase a better set. Thanks everybody for their input and advice on how to install them.

I used to taper the ends with the bench grinder , did it fix things ?
no, It just delayed the problem.

I just got an Ol' Raleigh 'Sports' 3 speed last year. Had the bike shop go over it (true wheels, etc ) , had the shop replace the orig. Dunlops (i kept them ) with basic Kenda tires & tubes. Got two flats after prob less than 50 miles !
Now Im tryin to decide what to do next, Tire liners or better tires ? These are 26 x 1-3/8" (37-590 ) I saw these Specialized 'Trisport' tires with Flak Jacket puncture protection , any thoughts on these ?
Thanks much

I bought a set of 26" X 1.5" wide tires last year, tire liners and standard sized 1.75" mountain bike inner tubes. The tire liners cut through the tubes in no time at all. The problem was overly tight fit of the inner tubes. I switched to much easier fitting 1 3/8" wide tubes, and haven't had a problem since.

After getting a flat in my front tire last summer and then a week later with my bike fully loaded with about 50 lbs. of gear getting a flat on the rear tire...I now roll with Schwalbe Marathons *AND* thorn-resistant tubes. If they stop me from getting flats, they're worth the money and the weight to me. I wouldn't recommend the combo for those who are weight-conscious about their bikes though. I've also found that with thorn-resistant tubes my tires seem to hold air better. Maybe the thickness of the rubber mitigates air leakage? Don't know...but they seem to maintain pressure better now.
That's all off-topic... I never wanted to mess with tire liners.
