Ok, N+1 may be getting a little high
Are you guys as crazy about collecting bikes as I have become? I am one of those guys who think that if 1 is good, 1+N must be N+1 times better! It is killing my pocket book and I really need to make a change.
I have hit the point now where I am just thinking that I have too damn many bikes. This is not so much because I don't love them or ride them; it is because it is very expensive to build and maintain a lot of bikes. I would just like to go on a ski trip or do some big rides instead of always throwing money into better parts for these bikes. Here is the stable.
Honestly, I am just completely cash strapped every month trying to reach/maintain my ideal builds on all of these bikes. I am building the JTS out to match the 9 speed on the MJ for a lot of reasons (Mostly racing related). Just ordered DA 7700 shifters for her. Will need saddle, seatpost, stem and rear der but is pretty much all spec'd out. I have an opportunity to update the TCR with 10 speed for $200 but I can't really think of a good reason to do it other than to have the 10 speed build kit ready for when I bring both cx racers up to 10 speed as 9 speed gets harder to find. If I did this, I could sell the old 9 speed kit and recover $100 or so. So going to 10 speed for $100 is almost a no brainer even though it will cash strap me AGAIN. I don't like having this obsession control me this way. AARGH! Thanks for hearing me vent at myself. |
You're Welcome ;)
I've been kicking around the idea of racing CX next fall and if I did, I'd need another bike. Right now I have two and that's really all I want to maintain but in my mind I could easily justify three, - four if you add in a CX bike. I keep track of how much money I spend on bike related stuff each year and it's a significant amount. |
Eh, just take a break on the parts ordering. :)
N+1 is the perfect number. Then again, I've been having to hold back myself - keep seeing shiny bikes I'd love to own - then I remember I'm in the middle of building my trike. :) |
When care and feeding of n+1 approaches budget+1, you just need to prioritize which gets left behind that month. Or that season. Or whatever it takes to make it work.
|
It is Ok to have too much bike, but not ok to have too much car.

I don't really have that much of a problem -- unless you ask my wife.

Riiiight....
Like Charlie Sheen... you can quit this habit anytime.. :innocent: |
That's why I as I get a new bike, I sell an old one.
|
If only I had this problem. I consider myself lucky to have one bike right now. It's been a saga just getting to the point I am now where that one bike is going to finally be a bike of good quality and not just a BSO. I could maybe make room to store one more bike in my apt. building's basement/utility room, but I doubt I'd be able to convince my wife that it's needed.
FWIW, I do dream sometimes. If I were to go N+1, I think it'd be a 1x_ or a SS setup on an old Peugeot frame... |
My next goal is to get down to 5 bikes. It sounds like you actually ride all the ones you have so thats good. I can't always say that. I just want fewer bikes that I can spend a bit of time and money on to ride instead of a bunch of bikes that I don't ride.
|
Thats why you just pretend you only own the ones you ride and just forget about the ones you don't ride:) Ive got three I ride, and about 10-15 in various stages of completeness in a storage unit I at this point don't even remember what I have.

These N+1 threads always make me happy about one thing in my life.
I have no spouse to control my habit. :) oh @ Fizzally: I completed my friend's drop bar mtb last night. She'll be riding it around BSU. Just an FYI, since now we know of at least two drop bar MTB's in town! :) |
I saw a girl last week on a rockhopper with drop bars at the albertsons on orchard I wasn't sure if it was the one you built up or not. Also I have two dropbar MTB's now
|
Here is a quick shout out to my fellow Boise commuters. I am running mostly along Ustick/chinden from Meridian Road to SUPERVALU downtown.
|
Yay boise, Im a bench to downtown commuter mostly vista/kootenai

Ha! Sawtooth! Hiya! I don't ride everyday, but when I do (several days a week) I'm taking garden to the greenbelt which then takes me all the way to HP. |
It was bright red but it still had logos and bar tape, look out girls all over boise are riding drop bar MTB's:)
|
N+1 is only a problem when the budget gets in the way, or you run out of storage and have to sleep in the yard :D
BTW according to the official bike counter, I have 30 bikes here at home...but I think she might have missed a couple ;) I will be thinning the herd, maybe, but then again maybe not. Aaron :) |
still keep the DIY light touring frameset I built in '76.
has gone thru several setup changes since then. currently ..Upright posture.. .. Folding bike, last +1, does take up very little room.. |
Pfft. You're not even close to N+1. You haven't even scratched the surface, much less plunged down the slippery slope of Vintage Steel.
When N+1 reaches multiples of 10, then you've got some thinking to do. Mind you, I work in a used-bicycle shop where I can trade hours for parts and frames, so my perspective might be a bit skewed. |
Been thinking about getting another bike (or two) recently. I suppose getting a fat tax return back didn't help. :D
My next bike (I think) will be a drop-bar road bike with disk brakes, for weekend group rides and fast commuting. I'll continue to use the MTB as my commuting "dirty girl." |

I'm actually giving away an old 70's Raleigh mixte to a friend to build up, and about to sell my 81 Miyata, because I just don't ride it much, having other bikes I've set up in a more favorable way for my needs/wants. |
Ha, heaven!
I think in my rockhopper research there was one rockhopper edition that came with drop bars? Back to N+1 - I only list the bikes I ride! Nevermind what's lurking in the garage, that is the wrong size, but just too freaking cool to get rid of without putting in some love first. |
