Same situation... I just put it in the back of my classroom and explain that I will make them miserable if they mess with it. Also, the first time a class sees my bike I will generally let them look at it and ask me questions about it. That seems to take the mystery away and they do not bother it. While I do not teach 11 year olds(shudder) I do teach middle and high school at an alternative school where approx 80% have been arrested for felonies so they have their own special character traits.....

I'd start by befriending the janitor, the coach, the music teacher, or any of the other people who have access to locked rooms.

My second thought is a bike locker of sorts. Build it just large enough to roll your bike into the end. Stack books on it, sit a bookshelf in front of it, whatever - so that it blends into the room. Doesn't take up less space, but becomes less of a problem.

The drying clothes might make a great theft deterrent.

I lean mine up against the wall by the security guard shack at one work place, and against a wall where I can keep an eye on it at the other place. There are bike racks at both locations but they are crummy ones and the bikes become tangled up with one another. I have an office at the first location where I could bring mine in but I wouldn't be able to do my work. Hmm, priorities.

At my previous job, the employer provided 5 racks under a shallow stair well. Others kept their bikes under one of the two other stairwells in the building that did not have racks. About half the bikes in the office were not locked.

Current job has about 20 times as many employees and does not allow bikes inside any building. The federal police can cite us if we are caught doing. There are about 200 bike lockers scattered around the site for employees as well as a few dozen bike racks. The lockers are free as long as we don't lose the key. Lost keys incur a $30 charge. The bike racks are a bit hidden and before I started work, I had a hard time finding them the few times I had to go to HR before my first day.

Outside our office, unlocked and there is not even a window which I could see the bike through, I have to go outside to see it. I haven't locked my bike since last summer, just leave it unlocked where ever I am, at home, the post office, skating rink, wherever. I think I will have to start locking it a again now when spring is coming.

This is what worked for me. My school's PE teacher lets me park my bike in one of the gym storage closets.

Thanks to a very responsive HR group where I work, we have plenty of (available) bicycle parking spaces. (A floor rack is also located opposite the wall hooks.)

I just park my bike up on the racks outside work.
I work on a quiet business park so very little traffic and there is normally a security guard on reception just inside too.

I lean my bike against the wall in my office under my whiteboard. To prevent dings I stuck a 6" round plastic wall protector, the type designed for protecting a wall from doorknob strikes, at the spot where the drop handlebar touches the wall. I occasionally clean small tire marks off the wall with a Magic Eraser abrasive sponge.

Beauty of mine that it fits right under my cubicle, having a folding bike works wonders on my little commute to work. Don't have to worry about theft unless my co workers feel like it.

They probably take it for joy rides around the office when you're away. It would be tempting.

Those are the greatest bike racks I've seen...so simple. They look easy to make too.

I'd been considering building something, but I saw that for $20 on clearance at Target and don't think I could have come close to something as presentable as that for $20 in a DIY project.

I have a foldable bike with 20" wheels that can be kept hidden under a desk or in a corner.

Another teacher...

What is it with all us teachers biking to work? I suppose that's a good thing. I've been off and on, but when I'm on, I store the bike right in my room. (I trust my high schoolers.)

I never tried it, but I'm sure the principal at the last jr high I worked at would have an anurism if I brought my bike into the building.
Right now I'm at an elementary school in Taiwan. Bringing a bike inside would be like asking to park your car inside. Ain't gonna happen.
When we return to the US, I like the idea of a box blending into the class decor.

I park mine in my cubicle. The only bike rack outside my building isn't even bolted to the concrete pad it's sitting on.

Mine either sits right outside my office window, or in a small garage-doored store room we have.

Under the stairs in the building. Facilities even got me a rubber mat to park on without me asking.

@Colleen: Kickstand FTW. OK, you may get barred from every bike shop if you put a kickstand on a $3500 bike. I'm very confident that I'll never own a $3500 bike (if someone gave me one I'd sell it and use the money to go to Hawaii or something), so I wouldn't know.

I recalled a little over a year ago when I bought my carbon fiber bike. At the same time, I was also retrofitting my MTB as a backup commuter. I was at REI with a new worker whom I never met before. I decided to do a one stop shopping. So here I was paying for my Carbon Bike along with a Topeak rack, and a Topeak bag with a side pannier. The saleman was giving this WTF expression on his face. I told him those were for the commuter bike and not the carbon bike. He breathe a sign of relief. Too bad I was not also buying a kickstand at the time

In my office now. About to change jobs, so will be looking for storage options for the first couple of weeks. In the office will not be an option at the new job.

I work at a middle school, the one time I parked my bike outside someone stole my headlight. Little f***ers. So, I make sure its in. I am current athletic director, resigning this year but with budget cuts looks like they might not replace me so my parking space should be secure. I have a room I share with old library stuff, PTA and Athletic equiptment. I keep unlocked most of the day so my kids can get in if they need to, but only the ones I trust know that. I ride right up to door, change and I am good to go.

I'm lucky enough to be able park mine in a kseldom visited (by the public) hallway in the basement of my organization's building. Maintenance and security go through there regularly, so foul play is very very unlikely.

I used to freelock my hybrid, then got lazy. Now that I'm upgrading to an LHT framed bike, I may get a little paranoid and start locking again.

i live in nyc and keep my bike locked outside in front of the building. i work right across the street from a police checkpoint so there are cops maybe 20feet from it at any given time. Although I do not believe they would be aware of a smooth bike thief it is a good deterant.

While I can store my bike next to my desk, I can only bring my bike up through the freight elevator which stops running at 5pm on the dot...unfortunately that's no excuse to leave early
