Commuting forum moving up in popularity
Commuting is now the 4th most popular forum on Bikeforums.net. Seems like it didn't used to be so heavily used. Here are the top 6 forums as of 5/13/11:
- Road Cycling - 2,835,929 posts
- Single Speed & FG - 1,168,644
- Classic & Vintage - 734,882
- Commuting - 723,763
- Bicycle Mechanics - 544,536
- Mountain Biking - 433,476
At the rate the Commuting forum is growing, it could pass Classic & Vintage before long if (if gas prices stay so high). For owners of bikes with just one gear and sometimes no brakes, SS/FG riders sure have a lot to talk about. Meanwhile, Mtn Bikers must be spending more time in the woods than chatting on forums.

Commuting still seems more like home to me than the other forums, and I think I'm not the only one that feels that way.

This has always been the first forum I visit. Never checked out Road, SS/FG, or C&V.

As much as I'd like to do other types of riding more often (namely weekend road riding and touring) I still do over 90% of my cycling miles commuting. Accordingly I spend the majority of my time here. The only forums I look at with anything resembling regularity are this one, touring, and clydes.

Spent some time in the C&V forums but I'm more into riding than restoring. This forum just seems like home. I also visit the advocacy and safety forum. It is ok but doesn't ever seem as positive as this one.

this sub-forum is definitely my home at BF.net as well. i like it it because, while it definitely has a focus on the specific activity of commuting by bicycle, it seems to be the forum most closely aligned with how i view cycling. to me biking isn't a sport, or a recreation, or a hobby, or an interest, rather it's an all encompassing way of life; it's how i move through and about my world every single day.
i also like this forum because it's not about a specific kind or style of bike. we have people in here commuting on all manner of two wheeled contraptions - race bikes, mountain bikes, touring bikes, vintage bikes, hybrid bikes, cyclocross bikes, single speed bikes, folding bikes, fixed gear bikes, recumbent bikes, cruising bikes, etc.
i also periodically check out the car-free, utility, and winter biking forums, but they're less active than this one, and hence less interesting.

I've been a roadie for many years, but identify more with commuters now since I commute almost every workday but usually rec ride only once a week. It's also more interesting (to me) discussing various commuter issues than arguing over Campy vs Shimano, weight weenie stuff, carbon frames and components, fastest speeds, etc.

I seem to be split equally between commuting, utility cycling and touring forums. They have a lot in common too. Although, I haven't visited here as frequently as I used to for a month or so.

Interesting. I should check out the other forums more often. I've never even clicked on SS/FG, but I imagine C&V would have something I like.
Mountain bikers already have a great forum outside of BF, so I'm sure that plays a role too.
