So long, trusty steed. You served me well over the years.

so i was hit by a bus on my ride to work this morning (can't go into details until things get sorted out legally).

    the good news: i'm alive.

the bad news: my trusty old 1996 Raleigh M-80 MTB commuter is totaled

i had this bike for 15 years, and as some of you may know, i LOVED the crap out of it. it's just a thing, and things can be replaced; i'm overjoyed to be alive, but still, the loss of my oldest and toughest steed makes me a little sad. no matter how much money i spend, i will never be able to truly replace it.

    R.I.P. good friend:

    original MTB form

with summer slicks and rigid fork after hybrid conversion

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

with winter studs and bull horns

i hope bicycles get to go to heaven too.

I'm glad to hear you are okay.
Total bummer about the bike - hopefully the bus owner (city or otherwise) will replace the bike if they are faulted with the accident.

Sorry to hear about your accident. They can never replace the sentimental value of some things.

trust me, i'm ECSTATIC about the fact that i walked away from my first collision with a bus, most people aren't so lucky. somebody up there likes me; i've never felt so blessed.

however, this thread is about the bike, not the accident. there will be time to talk about the details of the accident after things are settled legally; i made this thread merely as a little tribute to losing a friend that's been with me for so long, that i've spent so much time, money, and energy into customizing to be exactly the way i wanted it, that has provided so many years of quality, bomb-proof, heavy-abuse riding. sadly, as robust as it was, it was no match for a city bus. i suppose few bikes, if any, are.

i can't be the only person in history that has ever formed an emotional bond with an inanimate object like a bicycle, can i?

yep, onwards and upwards to bigger and better things i suppose........... but still, if i could have any bike in the entire world right now, i'd want my old bike back.

Sorry to read about this, and glad you're able to walk away and write about it. I figured out pretty quickly after I resumed riding that I may not have liked bicycling then, I liked my bicycle. It's been a pretty trustworthy companion in many journeys over the years too, much like yours.

Glad to hear that you are okay ! I am very "attached" to my bikes as well and a loss would definitely hurt... But as the Bike Snob wrote "its only a machine, and the only thing that we lose is a bike". That is a really bad paraphrase =) but you can get the idea =)

Your bike looks really clean in those pictures, how did you keep it so clean living in a high rise?

It wouldn't be unfair to accuse me of being a bit OCD when it comes to bike maintenance/cleaning. after all, a clean bike is a happy bike

i'm fortunate to have a big balcony attached to my high rise condo where i do all of my bike work. you can see some of the grease stains on the balcony floor in the pics above. in winter i take advantage of the open shop time that west town bikes so generously offers to urban cyclists to keep their rigs running smooth and clean during the cold and messy time of the year.

That was a nice looking bike. Were those first generation Rock Shox? They look like the ones on my Rocky Mountain. Do you think you'll get another mountain bike, or something (as people like to say) faster?

I hope I didn't sound like I was trivializing your attachment to the bike Dan, I do understand how you feel. I hope you come to love the replacement almost as much.

yeah, those were first gen rock shox. once i turned the bike into a dedicated commuter/winter bike, i put a rigid cro-mo fork on it because that rock shox fork didn't have any lockout capability, so it was just an energy suck for riding on pavement.

i'm not sure what the replacement will be. i already have a titanium road bike that's more than fast enough for me (i don't ride competitively or anything like that). what i really need is a strong, durable, and rugged urban assault vehicle for foul weather and winter bike commuting (but relatively lightweight so it's still sorta fast). maybe a cyclocross with disc brakes. or maybe a lighter weight hardtail with a lockout fork. or maybe i'll go full dedicated winter commuter and look at something with disc brakes and an IGH. maybe even, gasp, a single speed!

lots of options to consider. disc brakes seem high on my list though. rim brakes, regardless of style (canti, caliper, v-brake, etc.), kinda suck in gloppy, messy winter weather. i'd also like to find something that comes with or is compatible with drops or bullhorns because i find the parallel hand position to be a lot more comfortable than conventional flat bars.

it's all good. my second post in this thread was merely to reiterate and clarify that i'm overjoyed to be alive and relatively intact.

bikes are just bikes. i'll trade a bike for my life and health ANYTIME (duh).

    it's just that i really, really, really, really, really, really, really, liked my bike. c'est la vie. . . . . . . . . . . .

Nope. I've been riding the same Cannondale touring bike since '92 and I'm dreading the day it needs replacing, for whatever reason! We've probably got 5-6000 hours of riding together.
