Smoking Commuter Cyclists
Sometimes while cycling or driving, I'll notice a fellow cyclist riding his bike with a lit cigarette in his mouth. It never ceases to amaze me as to how ironic that scene, really appears to be. First of all, the act of riding a bike is not only a form of transportation, it's also a form of healthy exercise. Secondly, riding a bicycle IMHO, should be an open act of current or present-day defiance against the attack upon our environment, in addition to being a form of exercise and transportation.
Smoking while cycling is so anti-green, oxymoronic, contradictive, hypocritical, and polluted. There's just something wrong with the whole image of it all!
I mean..Can you even see what's wrong with these pictures?

1920s sports medicine (smoking opens up the lungs for hard climbs) is entirely consistent with 1920s bikes (single speeds).

I don't think you've ever been a smoker. Some say that quitting smoking is harder than kicking heroin, because it doesn't ruin your life nearly as much. Be glad they're riding. The more bike riders in your community, the more juice with the city when it comes to to bike lanes and such!

What? Why must cycling be a act of defiance? Please, why can't it be a simple act of joy, or pleasure, or necessity, or transportation, or competition, or none of the above? Cycling is a ticket to freedom period. IMHO if someone wants to smoke and bike it is their choice, it's legal, and they are free do so.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Used to derive some great joy in getting on the old roadster and going for a nice ride in the valley and then, upon reaching my destination would break out the tea and load my pipe.
I also used to harass my riding mates by waiting for them at the tops of long climbs with a cigarette... and then there was always mountain biking.

I've known runners who smoke too. There are people who have a diet Pepsi with their high calorie/high fat lunch.
Personally I do a number of things on a regular basis that aren't "good for me" per se but I enjoy them, even if the pleasure is fleeting.
Some of these people might have taken up cycling in part for health reasons but they find it difficult to quit smoking. Would you prefer that they quit cycling until they stop smoking (even if that's never)?

As has been intimated above, you're automatically assuming that one that rides a bike is a) in to good health, and b) in to preserving the environment. While this may be true in a lot of cases, one does not always beget the other.
In the early 90's I recall seeing a guy riding in full kit and smoking. Then (as now) it tickled the irony meter (thus I'm guilty of making that same logic jump, as well).

Cycling doesn't have to be a form of exercise. By that logic all smokers must be stationary. No walking while you smoke, that's soooo hypocritical man!

While I don't smoke, I'm certainly not green. I'd rather see a thousand folks riding their bikes and smoking than another ****** driving a hybrid..
