Then, when you really stop caring what you look like, you start taking in stray animals. When you start taking in stray animals, you can't stop taking in stray animals. (Isn't that how the comercial goes). Anyway, once you get up to a couple cats you'll start having left over litter pails that make into great panniers to go with/replace your milk crate. Then you're hardcore (and your stuff is safe in a waterproof container).

Attach with some zip ties and you have a cheap and solid cargo carrier. I also had a small bungee net in it to keep things from hopping out of it.

Center it the best you can, but you may have to be out of alignment just a bit depending on your rack. I had to on mine, so I cheated mine to the right/drive/curb side.

I drilled some holes in my crate so it aligned the way I wanted it.

Come to think of it, it was my beverage crate that didn't line up quite right, but I still liked it better than the milk crate.

Here's my "milk crate" setup for The Rig. It's a "shell" from Coca Cola that holds a dozen 1-Liter Coke products. It is secured with bungee cords and zip ties. In case you're curious, the lights are a pair of NiteRider Cherrybombs on the edges, a Planet Bike SuperFlash Turbo (1 Watt) and a Cygolite Hotshot (2 Watt) in the center, then back on the seatpost is a Radbot 1000. It's quite a display after dark (and even during daylight!) lol! The pic:

I used to have one on mine, but made a waterproof pannier from a Costco laundry detergent bucket. (CLASSY!). I put the milk crate on the back of my kayak, great for holding my fishing gear...

You guys go ahead and rock those milk crates. But call me what you will, the only way a milk crate will ever touch my bike is if I crash into one of you.

I'm not a huge fan of crates, mostly because when they're on top of a rear rack it makes it harder to swing a leg over.

They work fine for hauling crap around though.

Some cyclists only ride wearing spandex shorts, logo jerseys, Oakleys and Giro Aeons, and when they go three blocks to the local store they take their G-Class. The essence of humanity is that this person and the one with the milk crate on the back of their bike can both despise each other. It's a great system.

If you are carrying strap-ons around in a milk crate, then you truly have transcended caring about what others think. I salute you.

Dear Mal:

I live in an area where bike theft is a real problem and my milk crate basket helps "uglyfy" my bike and make it less attractive to thieves. It is also practical as I do use it as a basket.

Coffee cup holders on the back of a bamboo crate--so necessary.

Seems like it would be a good way to practise formation riding when one's riding partner wants to access their drink on the go.

I've seen coffee cup holders on the bars before but never on the rack.
