My Fred-ed Steamroller in exile from SSFG. No fenders as I'm in the desert, but otherwise: Nitto moustache bars, Michelin Krylion 25C tires, Delta half-clips on the pedals, Carradice SQR Tour mounted to the Thompson seatpost (heh heh), rear reflector/binky clipped to the Carradice lid, Selle SMP Forma saddle, Revelate Tangle large frame bag, headlight added if riding at night. And OMG, a brake!

My winter commuter, parts are recycled (except for chain, two brake pads, a brake cable and rear cog). It is a fixed gear I made by bronze brazing together a freehub with my oxy-acetylene torch. Fred?

Well, yes and no. I think we do care about many things that we believe are important to us, like maybe comfort, utility, reliability, etc., and not what most people think is important. We're un-trendy.

I also think fenders looks cool. But I am sure we'd find some people who would disagree I say, let them ride through that dog vomit!!!

Fred? Nope. Not there yet. Your handlebar is... empty, no lights (minimum 4 required IMHO). But there is definitely some potential. Taking a torch to your bike doesn't necessarily make you a Fred, but it's definitely impressive. Try a bit harder

Your bike could easily pull a high score on the hipster scale. Fredliness, not so much. 25/100 and only thanks to the oversized bags you stuffed on an otherwise clean bike. Like Apu Nahasapeemapetilon says at the Quickie Mart: Thank you, come again.

ROFL. Darn, I thought the moustache bars would get some more love -- they've already earned me one roadie grimace.

With the recent non-Fred postings...

I suppose now is as good of a time as ever for me as the OP of this thread to fess up and take my dismal Fred rating like a man. The bike I commute to work on most often:

2005 Marin Lucas Valley

Carbon fork and seat stays. I added a carbon water bottle cage and stem spacers to match.
700x28 Gatorskin tires for flat resistance and preservation of speed.
Forte MTB pedals
Cheap Nashbar frame bag so I can carry next to nothing.
Only one tail light and headlight (not pictured) to keep things uncluttered.

I did place reflective tape between the spokes to better alert motorists behind and oncoming, but I used black so I could at least hide the Fredness of this during the day.

I love riding this bike to work... except when I get caught in the rain, like I did yesterday on my way home.

I have a "foul weather" bike that I'll post later that I promise will score much higher!

Gonzo likes your saddle.

And I personally think the bars and bags give it plenty of fredliness.

62, including bonus points for having Phil Wood grease and Pro Link lube visible in the photo

IMHO, you also have crossed the line from Fred to MacGyver. Besides, without roadies there can be no freds and there certainly are no roadies in those conditions.

In your favor:

Rear reflector
Pie plate (!)
Nashbar frame bag and bottle holder
Bar ends
Nashbar "Stand By Me"

Unfortunately, it's not nearly enough to overcome even the carbon fork, to say nothing of the general clean good looks of the bike.

Fredliness melts at the mere mention of the name Eddy Merckx. A bike with his name on it can be profaned, but cannot be made fredly.

On the other hand, "replacing" an Eddy Merckx with a Salsa Casseroll gets you back in the game. The Salsa by itself would rate low in fredliness, but just as the aura of the Cannibal protects the first bike against fredliness, it leaves the stigma of insufficiency upon all those in its wake.

0 for the Merckx
46 for the Casseroll (having been doubled by the Merckx effect)

Is that a New Belgium Brewing bell?

While the bike shows signs that it could easily be de-fredded, it's current condition is nearly worthy of a white-bearded rider.

Good eye, all of my bikes have a new belgium bell and a bottle opener held on the frame by a magnet, I painted this bell black to match the rest of the bike. Most people here in New Belgium land dont recognize the bell until they can see the bottle cap as they only come in silver.

Hmm... I tried to de-Fred my bike today and nearly got run over so.....

Better Fred than Dead, baby!

Lights, air-horns, fenders, bags... the works! I'm gonna make being a "Fred" the latest fashion statement for cyclist! Hell, I won't stop till I see fenders and air-horns on Tour-de-France bikes! lol

No, I think that's more hipster -- except in Portland where it's considered normal. Of course, 'normal' means almost the opposite in Portland of what it means in most other English-speaking areas.

That is a handmade leather frame bag on my bike that I bought from a hipster, so I'm confused myself.
