Checked out the Cygolite Hot Shot at REI. I blinded myself, it's intense.

What do you guys think about this:

Which tactical light on the Deal Extreme website do you guys suggest?

I am looking at the website and there's a crap load of lights and lighting equipment. Is it one of the bicycle lights? Or are should I get one of the bicycle light mounts that are available on the website and one of the tactical lights?

Same experience w/those lights. The PBSF "Turbo" model is pretty close though.

Most of the talk here is about tail lights; my experience (most recently tonight, riding home from my niece's baby shower/party) is that the Coleman Max 144 mini-flashlight is PLENTY! I have it strapped to a homemade cradle bolted to my bar, and it seems as bright as a car headlight! Powerful spot 30+ feet ahead, a nice halo around it. Cost me $24 & change...yes, at Wally World. Pair that with an LED blinky, and you should be well taken care of.

So, based on everything I am reading and checking out the different suggestions, this seems to be the least expensive combination that I am seriously considering:

Sette Glo Headlight

Sette ST-316 Glo Safety Light

These two should do, yes?

Maybe.

Truth is, lights are going to be one of those that you will have sort out for yourself. Those lights might work for, then again they may not. Everyone has different night vision, rides at different speeds, just different needs in general. And about the only way you're gonna figure it out is to actually use them.

Agreed. I ride in NYC daily and those little, cheap lights people have are pretty useless. Do it right, or don't bother at all.

I live in a small town, and small lights don't work here either. More light is better.

Agreed - especially with prices these days. Great, high quality bright lights are a fraction of what they used to cost.

So do you guys think those two Sette lights that I linked will be okay for my purposes?

Which are essentially just getting around the city.

I live in Namhattan, and indeed, there are lots of bright lights and street lights that keep things constantly illuminated. I would imagine that because of that, it would be easy for motorists and pedestrians to see cyclists riding down the street which would be to the cyclists benefit. The lights would just be something additional, or for when riding down somewhat dimly lit side streets.

So, in that sense, I guess I originally figured elaborate bright lights probably aren't going to be necessary. But I guess I am wrong.

The Sette lights are very inexpensive, and I could probably just invest in some rechargeable AAA batteries for them.

I like the minewwt mini's. 100's on the bar and helmet, 150 on blink mode on the bar run day and night. Not cheap but the 150 was like only $ 70.00.
Tractorlegs, I really find the cygolight rear usb to be VERY bright. 2 watts vs 1/2 watt for the PBSF. I got the rack mount holder for it. I find this light needs to be aimed correctly for best results.

I think the opposite. With tons of bright lights around, you need to have a bright light to stand out, or a flashing one that differentiates you from the other "noise." Or one that's bright AND flashing

Example: here's the last left turn on my way home. I have to get into the center-turn lane. How well would I show up with dinky little lights, against this kind of a background full of powerful lights?

Ah so, grasshoppah

Another example: look ahead, see the car on the right waiting to pull out? Amidst this stream of car traffic, a low-powered bike light just isn't going to get attention. Something with a flash pattern or some serious power is the way to go:
