Happy Winter Solstice

aka, 'Darkest Day of the Year'.

Be careful out there this evening, my fellow commuters.

And have a very happy Sunreturn Festival.... er, um, Merry Christmas.

I can feel the days getting longer already. Unfortunately the weather will get worse but "Here comes the sun". Charlie

Not to be a wet-blanket but...I read that the sun rises continue to occur later each morning for another couple of weeks. As for Seattle it appears to be dusk about 9AM until 4... THEN it starts getting "dark"

Controversy!

'Shortest' is what I should have said:

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, respectively, in the sense that the length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a minimum for the year.

I remember those kind of days from my years living in Olympia.

I said good-bye to the sun last evening with happy thoughts: Now the days will be getting longer. Another couple of months and it may still be daylight when I get home.

Yeah Atlanta is tempting. After riding in the summer, I have to confince myself ..."no it's not getting dark yet, it's only lounchtime ... then reacing for those light switches

The sun rises later in the day until around Jan 5 and then starts to rise earlier. The sun also sets at its earliest point on (or about) Dec 5. The sun has been going down later in the day for almost 2 weeks now.

Go look at https://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.html and you can print out the sunrise/sunset table for any location in the world. I've used this for years. It's kind of fun to plot the data in Excel. The winter and summer soltices are the shortest and longest days, respectively, of daylight but they are not at the minimums or maximums for the sunrise and sunset. Just one of those quirks of our tilt-a-whirl world.
