I'm glad in real life I don't have to make that decision, but to play along. I would first keep a touring bike due to them being able to do more things vs a road race type of bikes I have; of the two I would keep the 85 Schwinn Le Tour Luxe even over the 07 Mercian Vincitore because of it's simplicity to work on even though I like the looks of the Mercian better. Plus I have a spare 700c narrow set of wheels that will fit on the Schwinn but not the Mercian because the Schwinn and the rear spare rim both are the older freewheel design. So at least with the Schwinn I can take the wider touring tires off and put narrow ones on if I have a need for speed.

Wow...this question is hard! My first instinct is to say my Marnati, but as wonderful as that bike is...and as much as I love it...if I could only keep one bike, it would have to be a versatile bike capable of almost anything...

I'd keep my Koga Miyata...there's not much it can't do. It's comfortable over distance, has plenty of rack/pannier hauling capacity, fenders to keep me dry and is still fun to ride.

It would be a tough call, but if I could only keep one of my bikes, it would be my old Lemond. I don't recall the name, but it was the first year they made them (89?) & it was the high end model, pearlized white. It was my first 'nice' bike & it's still the nicest riding bike I've ever ridden. It's got to be the steel frame & the relaxed geometry, but I could ride that one all day, every day & be happy. The Trex FX 7.6 is a very close second though

I ordered a new bike recently so when that gets here I'll be able to answer the question more accurately.

But for now, road bike. Not as versatile (25mm tires max) but I ride it the most and enjoy riding it the most. It's not that bad in the wet either if you're careful. I would get full fenders if I was going to ride in the rain regularly though. And I've ridden 700x25c off-road for short periods without puncture issues - it's doable. Obviously not rideable in snow/ice though

Hard to argue with your choice - especially if going car free. Only drawback might be as a racebike. My CAADX 5 can hang with the carbon fiber wunderbikes. I suspect I'd have a hard time on a Big Dummy. However, imagine the wake of crushed egos if I could... Tempting

If I could only keep one bike, I'd save up and buy more bikes. For me, having only one bike is like having only one pair of shoes. Sure, it can be done, but I like having different shoes for different purposes. Same with bikes.

If I could only keep one, it would be the Kona Jake without question. I've used it for absolutely everything I've done with any of the other bikes and it has performed well. Commuting, CX racing, century rides, trail riding, bike paths ... all handled exceptionally well.

I'd keep my 1980 Schwinn Voyageur of which I am the original owner. I like my other bikes just as well but I would keep this one because I do not think I could part with it.

Ya know, I'm not sure. I used to think that I'd keep my Bianchi Valle (converted to drops, so it's now like a Volpe plus dynohub), but I can walk to work or take public transit easily enough. I'd be tempted to keep the BMC road bike because it makes me feel faster than I am. Besides, we have a sort of bike team at work, custom jerseys and all, so this would be more appropriate for riding with them.

It also depends on whether I'd still live where I am or if I have to move -- which would probably be the reason I'd have to give up some bikes. If it's dirty and a bike commute sucks, I'd keep the FS MTB so I could feel like a kid.

I'd also consider ditching all three of these and building up a custom commuter with everything I'd want -- dynohub, disc brakes, drops (my Three D's), in Ti or maybe even carbon.

Side question -- are we restricted to just one wheelset?

A no-brainer. My Rodriguez fixie. I use it for everything - commuting, brevets (including Paris-Brest-Paris), weekend rides, bike to take on business flights (it has couplers), even riding on velodromes. It has no racks, but I never do loaded touring anyway, just credit-card touring.

I also would go with a Big Dummy/Xtracycle if I was only going to have just one. As a matter of fact, the only one I actually ride is my Xtracycle. The other six bikes are a little jealous.

Hands down it would be my Surly Cross Check. Gears, no gears, fat tires, skinny tires, racks, no racks, etc...

Hopefully I will never be faced with such a doomsday scenario.
