Best Rear Rack for Surly Cross-Check
Hey, I'm looking for the best rear rack for the money for a Surly Cross-Check. I'd like something pretty big, as I'd like to strap my small backpack to it while I ride to work. I know it's going to hang off of the side a little most likely, and that's fine. Just looking for a good rear bike rack that will allow me to fit some fenders on it as well.

I just picked up a Nashbar rack for 20 bucks for my CC. I think unless you go into the 100 buck price point they are all the same.

Working in a bike shop I recommend nothing other than the topeak explorer racks. They come in all different sizes and the explorer series has a quick track system which allows you to attach certain topeak accessories with it easily and securely. I dont use anything other then bungees and a backpack but the feature it offers are cool. It comes in a disk brake version too if you have them. Its also not too expensive about $35 and the most secure one I have seen over nashbar or blackburn racks.

Also I forgot to mention that the topeak explorer rack is made to double as a rear fender too as the top middle is solid and they even make an extension to make it a complete fender. Otherwise you can still fit normal fenders underneath it.

I'd get a rack with a solid plate top for carrying soft items like a backpack. Topeak Explorer or Super Tourist DX if you're ever thinking of carrying panniers. These racks offer a lot of durability for not much money.
btw, I had a Tubus Cargo and replaced it with a Topeak SuperTouristDX because I wanted the plate and lower rails. I was so sold on lower rails I had some brazed onto a Cargo.

Tubus Logo has the lower rail mount, but a narrower upper surface.
Tubus offers an accessory spring clamp, to add , it may be part of
improving the pack carrying capacity.
platform width can be augmented with Plywood, and P clamps
around the rack tubes, screwed into the plywood.
