Maybe a Salsa Fargo/Vaya? Depending on the model, they come with brifters instead of bar end shifters.

Get the frameset and build it up. Not exactly a brain surgery and you get exactly what you want. It'll cost a bit more though than buying a complete bike.

...or get the complete bike and change out the shifters (I'd go downtube myself... )

^ That would be a lot cheaper than building up a frameset, in all likelihood. As a former wrench, we'd do stuff like that all the time. If you're lucky, the shop has a set of 9spd brifters laying around they've been stuck with and will give you a good deal on them plus credit for your bar end shifters.

All the bikes I bought from a LBS I've managed to customize in someway. A good shop will do part exchanges and sometimes even cut the price difference to your advantage.

I would say go and talk to your LBS which deals in Surly. By the way a real nice choice of a bike.

Bruce Gordon, hand made in California, with about the best racks on the planet.

He will build it up with brifters, if that is what floats your boat.

Not if you shop smart.

I put mine together using CL, eBay and bike swaps for parts source.

Patience is a virtue.

Maybe not close, but it's a tourer.

Of course your LBS that you order the LHT through, will change components
as you wish done.

new take-offs have trade in value at the Bike shop..
they know the parts are not used, so are re sellable .

Left friction bar end is so much more practical,
than the 3 ka-thunk STI FD shifting, IMHO, as a veteran tourist,
but it's your bike.

Jamis Aurora, although it can't take quite as fat a tire.

EDIT: Looks like the new Aurora has bar end shifters. When I looked at them they had integrated shifters. I was between the Aurora and LHT a couple of years ago. I bought the LHT, even though I thought I might prefer the integrated shifters, because I wanted to be able to run big tires, and I just liked it more. Turns out I love the bar-ends, once I got used to them, which didn't take long at all. The Aurora's a nice bike, though. Now my edit's longer than my post, and neither really answer your question

My choice after looking at both was the salsa casserole which I built myself but the complete casserole is very well equipped and has brifters.

Looks like Jamis has a third bike with a touring type steel frame and STI shifters, the Bossanova. Looks to have a bit more of a regular roadbike geometry than the other two, and has disc brakes. Selling as a commuter/weekend tourer.

+1
The exception on the left brifter is Campagnolo (not sure about SRAM)
