Having trouble making up my mind
Got a small window of opportunity to get a new bike at my primary LBS. For shins and grins, I had them check the Kona database for the availability of the 2011 Bike. The price quoted plus freight is lower than the MSRP on the Kona site. Kicker is that I'd have to put like 50% down, which would be non-refundable. They have reluctantly agreed to allow me to do an exchange for something out of their 'regular' inventory if I'm not entirely happy with that Kona.
The main reasons for the interest in the Kona Bike is that it is very similar in geometry to my Smoke, but with 0.4" longer chain stays, tires that are 0.45" wider, and the 3spd hub. It's the hub that gives me pause, because I'm not too entirely sure that 3 speeds will be enough for me.
Or I could just forego my desire to experiment with IGHs and go with the Giant Escape, which would lend itself better for longer trips if I find myself in the future swapping from the nice 5 mile r/t to 25 miles r/t with hills...

Different bike, but same question I had. i was looking at the IGH Nexus 4 speed vs. 9 speed Shimano Tiagra. Even though I'm in flat Florida I just couldn't justify so few gears and a smaller range of the 4 speed. Also, the 4 speed would not be very good for trips to hilly areas - making the bike more limited. i know I could have adjusted, but after so many years of having all the gears I want (and then some) it would be hard to adjust.
BTW - I don't care for triples or even doubles in many cases as mostly I can do with a single in front and 9 speeds in back. Looks better, lighter, and less to bother with.

You're an experienced cyclist, used to having more than just three speeds. Eventually, you'll most probably regret it. I'd go for the Escape, if the time is right, financially speaking.

I'm with you on the 1x_ set up, but there really aren't that many 'off the shelf/peg' complete builds. My primary LBS would have no problems ordering a Via 2 (1x8). Pretty sure I could get him to build one up w/o a firm commitment from me to buy. Alternatively, there is a new Jamis dealer in town that I could source a Commuter 2 (1x8) from. But since the Jamis shop shares a storefront with a vinyl building materials retailer (both locations are a combined store front), I don't think they'll have much floor space and may not be as willing to bring something in w/o a firm commitment.

Can't even begin to imagine why...
To be honest, I've rethought the need for a shiny new bike. While I can justify the expense for another one, I know my wife would be happier if I don't spend the $500-600 for a new one. I think I'll be better off in investing in more lights, possibly experiment with panniers again, and just keep an eye out on the local CL for an older rigid mtb or a Trek Multitrack.

I say, save a certain amount every month, until you can pay cash for whatever bicycle you want. You're a good guy...I know someone's just got to be looking over your shoulder
