looking for commuting lights

hi all, there are so many options for lights, and everyone has different ideas about what is best, but i'm trying to find/remember where i saw these particular lights. they're like neon tubes, but flexible and come in short and long lengths and you can run them along a tube, fork or stay. i have a feeling they're rechargeable.

the thing is, i commute, its getitng into the darker months, and i currently run a cateye headlight and taillight that are both pretty good, but they chew through batteries. the tail light is pretty solid, it's got two rows of LEDs with side ones too, and you can set each row to one of 4 different patterns so it's eye catching for drivers, but my headlight has a pretty lazy tempo for flashing, and drops strength really fast. i commute every day so something rechargeable at work would make a lot of sense and those strip lights make a lot of sense for side visibility.

the one other consideration is i only own 1 bike, so things need to be removeable with ease.

fire away!

This? Not rechargeable, but I have not changed the batteries on mine in over a year.
https://www.fibreflare.com/

I also have a Magicshine 1600 headlight on high power I can get about 2 hours of use out of.

I run NiteRider Mininewt 600 for front light and Cygolite Hotshot rear. I am very pleased with both these lights. Both are USB rechargeable.

Thanks turkey9186, that looks like them. how do you rate the visibility? the duo for the seat stays looks like a nice option, and combo'd with a couple on the forks or a front one, would hopefully make me stand out like a rolling christmas tree. I ride with a bag, so maybe one across my bag might be a good height too... hmmm

I don't think that Fibre Flare is what the OP was thinking about. I just saw those neon-looking tubes in a magazine that I no longer have. They looked pretty cool for visibility at night. However, they won't help you see the road in front of you.

I ride with a mini on my left seat stay. They are not as bright as the Cateye flashers I have on my seat pack and backpack. All of my coworkers have commented on the fact it can be seen from the side unlike the flashers though.

Maybe a mini on each seat stay and a long one under the top tube?

hey Papa Tom, i should probably clarify, i'm really looking for ways to be seen, not so much see. my commute is lit roads the whole way, i can see fine from my house to my work and vice versa, so it's more about standing out on the road.

A couple of other options are the Bike Glow and the Bike Brightz, or you could wait for the 3rd generation of the Down Low Glow.

Can't speak to the Cygolite, but I LOVE my NR MiNewt 600 Cordless! Flash mode for the day, walk mode for the night. I also have a NR MiNewt X2 that I use at night (flash) and keep a smaller battery powered (PB 5LED Beamer) light for backup.

Having never been hit at night, and 11 times during daylight, I can't emphasize the need to try to break the daylight invisibility issue that all cyclists suffer from.

On my primary commuter, I use a PB Superflash and a PDW Dangerzone. I've also got a PB Blinkie 3H on the helmet, and during winter, I put another PB Superflash on the backpack.

agreed. i still dress like a road-cone, hi vis lightweight jacket, and keep my lights on in the daytime (at least when i'm riding the city streets to work).

I've been waiting (in vain) for some other poster to take this paragraph on but maybe they know the gory details. I don't. I'm wondering if it could be a typo... surely you aren't saying that being hit 11 times is in anyway indicative of the general issue of 'daytime invisibility'. If you are, I assure you, it is not! There are many riders, yours truly included, who do nothing special during daylight riding, to enhance visibility and do not get hit. Ever. I for one always assume that drivers haven't see me. It does no harm to assume a driver cannot (hasn't) see(n) you. If s/he does, cool, consider it a bonus.

I'm very happy with Minewts 600. I run it on high blink during the day and steady at night. Noticed I am MUCH more visible to drivers in daylight with the flash mode on. The bar mount is not terrible, but it's the weakest link. On the upside, it's cheap to replace when it breaks and the light comes with a helmet mount.

Thanks for that! I've been looking for something along those lines, I'm going to give the smaller Bike Brightz a try.

You've been hit 11 times?!?!? And still ride? I would be scared to death to ever ride again if I got hit even once probably.

Q: Any experience with the Cool Blue Britz? I am partial to blue and was wondering how they would be perceived by law enforcement. Here in Honolulu, HI, blue lights are usually reserved for HPD. Just asking. Thanks.

No direct experience with any of the products- just things that I've come across over time and offered up for the OP's consideration.

As far as the blue light goes, there was a running 'debate' on them in the thread I started about amber lights.

I just read through your Amber lighting? thread. While the debate on using blue lights on a bicycle is compelling, I am more interested in safety and being seen by cagers. That being said, other than blue, what would the next best safety and being seen color be if I were to go with something like Bike Britz? Your thoughts?
