First Crash

Well it finally happened. Riding to work yesterday afternoon in a light rain when my tire caught the side of the bike path and I laid it down. My first thought was "well that wasn't so bad" then I took a look at my bike and well it wasn't pretty. Front rim was totally bent to hell, and the front brake had some serious damage as well. Luckily a guy saw me fall and gave me a lift the last mile to work in his pickup truck. Needless to say it sucked, but took the bike in to the local LBS got a new rim, fixed the brake and tomorrow morning I'm back on it! Was quite the experience, I think the worst part was the withdrawal from not being able to ride in today.

You suffered withdrawal from not being able to ride just one day?

Then you're one of us! No doubt about that.

Sorry about the wipeout. But I imagine that you already know it's going to happen every now and then.

Thanks for the support guys. Just got to work and the ride went smoothly this time. Although I must say I was a little less confident than I had been but I'm sure that will go away quickly. Just glad to be back on the road!

I can't count how many times I went down. Must of been 7 or 8 last year alone. Anything from destroying a flower bed to shearing a guard post mechanical arm off its frame. I've put the same rash on the length of my right arm 3 times this year. Don't cha just love it!!!!

Actually, no . . . I know that falling is a risk when riding, and I do whatever possible to minimize that risk. So, when it comes to going for it on yellow lights, blowing through stop signs, or otherwise behaving like a jackass, I'll pass. I've only been in one major fall in 5 years of bike commuting, when I collided with a guy that stepped in front of me between two parked cars. He didn't see me, and was so close when he stepped out, I don't think I even had time to brake. Although neither one of us was seriously injured, being off the bike for a month for all the sprains, bruises and contusions to heal was not fun.

Glad to hear that the OP was not hurt and kudos to the LBS for getting you back up to speed so quickly. After a major fall, it does take a little while to get the mojo back, but it does happen.
