Is neon yellow finally becoming cool?

Neon-yellow jerseys and gear used to one of the hallmarks of commuters, tourers and Freds. It took me a while to warm to the color as it is rather jarring, but I have become convinced that it really works and I've now got neon jerseys, jackets, vests and socks for commuting. What convinced me was being able to spot neon-clad joggers a half-mile or more in the distance, compared to the ninjas that you almost run over.

All of the sudden, however, neon yellow-green seems to have become very fashionable. Several college basketball and football teams sported neon gear last season, and at least one of the pro cycling teams (Liqui Gas) has worn neon kit for a while. I was at a department store last night and even saw some rather expensive neon yellow polo and golf shirts. Who knows, maybe even the racer wannabes and weekend warriors will start wearing it.

Anyone else noticing this trend?

I think Acidfast was suggesting that once you get to be of a certain age, "cool" isn't really applicable no matter what you're wearing!

In all seriousness, though, yes, I agree it looks like we're in a "day-glo" revival period right now.

That said, I don't think the safety vest will ever be considered cool when used for it's intended purpose. If Lady Gaga sports a tailored one over her bare breasts during a concert, well, that may be something different...!

I heard Grant Riv is coming out with a hip, urban day glo fashion line. Apparently tweed is not selling that well anymore.

Dayglo was fashionable in the early 90's too. We'll be fashionable to a while and then fashion will change and we'll be even more unhip.

Neon Lime Carhartt parka is my winter coat, wide reflective bands, etc.

but when it starts raining I whip out my Cycling rain cape.
No gloves short of seamless rubber ones would keep my hands dry.
But they are when tucked under the skirt of the rain cape.

I've never been cool. I have been run over. If neon yellow keeps me from being run over, I'm cool with it.

Where is the thumbs up button? Gotta fully agree.

Team LeakyGas has nothing on Farnese Vini. These are a real eyestab of full-on hi-vis yellow. Complete with hi-vis yellow helmets. And shoes. Matchy-matchy much?

+2 - ugly vs. visible to cars. I'm going with visible for the win.

there not "finally becoming cool" ... they're "becoming cool again."

in some parts of Europe (Eurotrash sneakers, for example), the neons never left

The least cool thing anyone can wear is a casket. Wear what makes you visible and be done with it.

I bet you remember the Partridge Family - and they got the idea for the bus from the Pranksters.

I'm just not sure, personally, that the colour of my shirt can make a driver better.

It might not make a driver better, but it will make my lawyer's job easier.
