Nashbar Steel Commuter Bike

This is interesting: cromoly lugged frame, Nexus 8, townie handlebars, no stickers:

The best I can seem to register for price is $502, including 20% Black Friday discount, plus tax and shipping.

Seems like a great price on an IGH bike.

Indeed, at a glance it's hard to find a downside to that bike at that price. I think that'd be a great year round town bike and best suited due to the more upright riding position for a commute of under 20 miles RT. It has all the important stuff on it already.

Let us know how it works out for you! I've seen some decent looking Nashbar MTB frames before, but have been too afraid to step into the water up to 'nad level.

What's not to love? There are adaptations in terms of comps and geometry one can change if desired. For example one could flip the handlebars over for a little more aero riding position. That said it's a good price. 500.00+ is about right. Wouldn't be a good deal @ 1000.00, though.

Flat fenders don't give one the coverage of curved and 38mm Kendas aren't exactly bulletproof, but everything else is right in the pocket. I'd get 32mm Schwalbe Marathon Plus', Planet Bike 700x45 fenders and some Shimano PD-520 pedals as upgrades and ride with pride. If I was still riding 20 mi rt urban and was looking for a year-rounder I'd be all over it.

Hey, I pulled the trigger on this bike. Received today and put together at lunch very quickly. It does have a Velo seat but not one from their catalog. Mine came with the PREMIUM Nexus red stripe hub SG-8R36. I am happy about that. Very brown, rough paint almost like primer. I bought the nashbar touring frame a couple years ago and that had a beautiful green paint job. I'm calling this paint job a theft deterrent. First try with the IGH. Will post more impressions later. Only rode up the street and back, had to get back to work. Very pleased.

Nice! Can you grab some photos also? Curious to see what the paint job looks like.

Here goes. These are in my living room with a crummy phone cam. I think it helps bring out the matte brownness.

Hey, that's actually a pretty cool feature from Nashbar. I think the paint job actually IS meant as a theft deterrent. It looks like a good rattle-can paint job. Much less likely to catch a thief's eye, in a bike rack filled with shiny bikes. Of course, if he sees the premium Nexus hub....

Do you plan to Fredify the bike? If any bike calls for generous application of reflective tape and stickers,it's one with a rough paint job.

Snowed 4 inches last night so no riding today. Maybe Sunday. Screwing around and flipped the handlebars. Will see if I like it. It's a lot more upright than I'm used to.

lol, I don't know about fredifying. It already has a nice kickstand. I'm going to leave the reflectors on the wheels. Is that sprung seat freddy? The fenders are flat strips of aluminum. I really like them. Platform pedals I'm leaving. It came with luscious, cushy, faux leather handgrips. It's like I'm getting away with something or like fleece. Fleece is too soft. Anyway.

Looking forward to the commute to work. 12 miles rt. Took the last couple years off. I had some DUI trouble years ago and ended up riding year round for three years in northwest Iowa. Got my license back and took a break. Really miss riding so getting back to it. I'm out of shape and feeling flabby.

It looks like a great bike for that distance. I have been eyeing their complete touring and cx bikes. Congrats on the new ride and getting back into it.

Just say that the brown paint is "vintage"!

Glad you're back to riding by choice!

Nashbar's dropped the price on this bike to $349. I just pulled the trigger on two. A 56 for me, and a 52 for the wife.

Not quite -- the NB is a 4 bolt crank and the fuji is a 5. So, maybe it took spray paint and a crankset swap .

BTW - I just ordered the NB like you. I couldn't believe the price, and even with any potential problems I still like the lugged frame.

I hate seeing these low prices on IGH bikes because it makes me want to buy one and I really don't need another bike. I might end up not being able to resist if the right thing comes along. I would like to try a IGH with more than 3 speeds at some point.

in 2002 i picked up an IGH 5 speed bike from vandessel sports on closeout for 200 . It had the mustache bars, was aluminum and 700s wheels. I had a blast riding that thing around NYC for several years I had to give it up because of a move 5 years later. The ability to shift into any gear at any time, (while stopped are standing up pedaling all out ) is really valuable to me.

I am looking forward to getting my hands on a similar setup but in steel this time.

Hey Greg: How wide is that saddle? Is it like Brooks B66 wide?

Hey TurbineBlade, that's funny, I just bought a B67 for this bike. The original Velo seat is not as wide, it's more like a B17. I would take a side by side pic but I put the Velo seat on a coaster brake commuter for my son who does not live with me. I thought the velo seat was uncomfortable. I've never had a sprung seat so this is only my opinion. The velo seat was foam over hard plastic and very stiff springs. I love the Brooks saddle. Definite springing action. In fact if I had to do it again I might go with the B68. I've never owned a Brooks saddle and I'm guessing they are naturally sprung? That might be another thread. Hope this helps.

Anyone know how wide of a tire could fit on the NB frame? Stock with 700x38c and fenders, I'm guessing 700x40+.

I managed to get them to combine the 349 price, 20% off and free shipping. So it was $279 to my door. I got the front fender to stop rattling by doing bending it a little. I'll probably swap out the seat and get some baskets to attach to the rear rack soon.

When did you order it? Is the coupon still good?
