Lost my U-lock keys
Really can't believe this. I just bought a Kryptonite U-lock less than 2 months ago and have only used it 2 or 3 times. Now it's useless. I know I was an idiot for not stashing one key in the desk drawer in the house and the other on my regular key ring. But I didn't. I had both keys in my saddle bag. Went looking for them Saturday afternoon and they're nowhere to be found. No idea where I could have lost them.
I recall Saturday morning after a ride I had my bike upside down behind my car to remove the wheels, and noticed that my saddle bag was open as I forgot to close it after removing my phone and car keys. Bike lock keys could have fallen out then. I went back to that area Saturday night and again Sunday afternoon to look around, but didn't see them anywhere. Either I didn't lose them there or somebody picked them up. Just venting. It wasn't the best Kryptonite lock ($20 version from Walmart), but still it pains me that money is pretty much just gone. |
Now you are smarter.. :crash:

Don't feel bad. I lost a U-Lock.
I stopped at a grocers to pick up some iced tea and a loaf of bread. I put the shopping bags into a handy grocery cart, unlocked the bike, put the lock into the grocery cart, unfolded a basket, put the groceries into the basket and rode off - leaving the lock in the grocery cart. I went back the next day. No one had turned in a lock. It was the most expensive iced tea and bread I have ever purchased. |
If you still have the packaging then you migjt be able to get replacement keys from the company, but I suspect that is gone also and that you might not have written down the key code number. Just be thankfull that you bike isn't locked up with the lock.

BIC pen
 |
I think when I bought mine you could send in a registration card and get replacement keys later if you needed them.
|
yeahhh I didn't do any of that registration stuff :(

I always keep keys to the variety of locks I have, when not in use, attached to the locks themselves with carabiners. So if I am going to lose a key when the lock isn't in use, I've somehow lost the lock too. When I lock a bike up, the key gets clipped to something I am carrying via the carabiner. It has worked so far for me.

If you still have the lock you might be able to get a key from the company. I've taken locks, not U-locks, into locksmiths and asked them to make me a new key. Since I had the lock in hand they did.

Is the lock locked to the bike? If so, expensive bummer. If not, bummer, but at least you don't have to call someone to figure out how to get your bike free.
|
No the bike is on the wall in the garage, and the lock is hanging on the hook behind the bike. I went looking for the keys because I was going on a group ride Saturday night with a stop mid-point and usually take the lock in case I feel the need to lock it up. But it was all good, we were all hanging around within view of our bikes.

The Kryptonite U-lock I got came with 6 keys. Interesting. But I did not get mine from Walmart and it was not $20.

serious question here ... why key instead of combo?
like an ABUS Bordo? |
You can get your lock re keyed from Kryptonite, obviously not worth it in this case, but heres the link. https://kryptonite.zendesk.com/entri...-rekey-service

I had a U-lock stolen 3 years ago. Unfortunately, it was attached to my bike at the time. I just bought an Abus Bordo with a combo lock just so I can't lose a key.
