What I did on my summer vacation

Anyone take time off of work this summer, and if so, did you do any cycling during your vacation? I saw alan s's post on his Niagara trip, and thought I'd share too. No pics, though, unfortunately.

My wife and I decided to do some camping in the southeast BC mountains (Kootenay Rockies). We thought about taking our bikes along, but it didn't work out logistically. Too bad, because it seemed like we were the only ones in the entire campground that didn't have bikes! Fortunately for me, my wife's brother lives in Fernie (a mere 30 minute drive from our campground) which appears to be a mountain biking Mecca. He invited me out for an afternoon of biking, and I was very willing to take him up on his offer. It was quite a novelty for a prairie boy like me to ride from the LBS where I picked up my rental to the trail head -- no driving required! All the hills I do on my commute paid off, and the guys I was with were (duly) impressed with my climbing prowess...and perhaps a little less impressed with my tentativeness going back down, but hey, it was my first time doing any real mountain biking. Rainfall made it a bit sloppy and slippery, but I managed to keep the rubber side down. It was quite a rush, and the afternoon was over all too quickly. I returned to the LBS covered in mud and grinning ear to ear.

After we got home again, I rode a 300 km randonee, because my legs needed to release some pent up energy. That's about 2 weeks worth of commuting in one day, appropriate for the time I was away.

Now I'm back to work, and while vacations are never long enough, at least I get to cycle to work!

Anyone else?

Our vacation to Destin FL is next month. Planning to throw my bike in the car to ride some out near the beach, so hopefully will have some pics from that. My wife doesn't have a bike so we're thinking of renting one for her maybe one day. She's more interested in attending a Zumba class while down there.

I did the Cabot trail, in Cape Breton island, Nova Scotia. Three superb days of cycling, beautiful scenery and a few hard but nice climb.

Awesome. My wife and I drove the Cabot Trail on our honeymoon 14 years ago. Now that I've gotten into long distance cycling, I want to return to cycle it someday. That, and pedal PEI from one end to the other.
