Commuting's 'Pay it Forward' Thread

OK, Ive noticed that you guys here at the "Commuting" forum do not have a "free bike stuff" thread!? So I guess Ill have to start one Its pretty simple, you've got stuff laying around that you never use right? (we all do) why not give it to someone that can use it? First person to PM you gets it! Shipping cost will be paid by winner of the item. Or if your a cool arse member you'll also take care of shipping but its totally up to you Please do not sell the items you win. Thats just wrong If you no longer need them please give them to someone else
I'll go first!
Ive got a set of LARGE Salsa Cycles winter gloves! Used once! First person that replies via PM gets them shipped free! YAHOO! This feels great! Please try your best to keep this going people It'll make you feel great!
EDIT! Gloves are gone!

Hey idea for this thread I mentioned in a PM:

If you get something you should be encouraged to give something, like if you get one item you offer two, kind of like Pay it Forward. It would help get the ball rolling

+1000! Thanks for posting that fine idea!

Here are a few cool rules that I stole from the C and V, I'm sure they wont mind a bit = )

Quoted rules are as follows:

"#1: Anyone, (Giver), can offer as many gifts as they wish to give away for free.

#2: Only one gift can be claimed by each person, (Taker).

#3: This thread is for gifts only.

#4: NO REGIFTING OR SELLING ON EBAY OR CRAIGSLIST

The shipping of each gift will be paid by the Giver unless it falls under one of the three exclusions.

- Taker offers to pay for shipping based on size or distance.
- It's an unreasonably large or heavy gift requiring freight.
- Internationally shipped gifts.

Have fun everyone......

...let the giving begin."

I don't know about shipping, but I have a bike frame-a crappy 10 speed roadmaster with a busted seat stay on the one side. If anyone is looking for some metal for an art project or a homemade trailer hack let me know. I'm in Central OH if anyone wants to pick it up. PM me and I can see about getting pictures by the end of the weekend. The handlebars and stem are decent, I think the crank set is not too bad either.

I just gave away a half dozen tires and three boxes of stuff to a start up co-op at a local college. That said, I may still find something to share.

While your idea is a good one, this forum is not like over in the C&V forum where folks have lots of "left overs" from flips & projects. People on this forum ride what they have as transportation. It is not that people are stingy, they just don't have crates of parts to go through. Don't be too quick to find the negative in folks.

Cant help it, I use my bike for transportation and am not the riches man in the world BUT I do find things that I have sttting around doing a whole lot of nothing that can be donated to the cause but no biggie. Be who you are I always say. Feel free to have the mods close it up if you feel the need. No worries on my part.

This is a great idea and I hope to participate, but at the moment I'm using all the bicycle gear I have. I promise to post items when stuff I'm not using turns up, or if I move on from the stuff I'm using now to other stuff. In the meantime, you can, as Gandhi (and Bruce Almighty) preached, be the change you want to see. If you still have stuff sitting around that you're not using, please keep posting it. Maybe the idea will catch on in this forum.

For those who don't know, there are threads similar to this one in some of the other bikeforums.net sub-forums.

Ok I have a few things taking up space, since I sort of suggested the new name for the thread:

Tektro r200 lever, left (good for fixed gear)
specialized tires 700x23c, w/ flak jacket, moderately used
mixed tires (maxxis detonator, vittoria zaffiro, same as above)
a few small bags and pouches, ask for details
trek blinkie w/ clip
a few other small things, ask if looking for anything particular

Also here is my deal for shipping:
I'll pay shipping only if the receiver posts at least one item of relative equal value(with similar shipping terms), otherwise the receiver pays the shipping.

Wow, relax.... don't take it personally. This was a good idea but don't misinterpret the low volume of participation as something negative. I'm sure plenty of folks here 'pay it forward' whenever the chance arises. But it's like this, if we were to donate money or goods to every good cause that hits us up, we'd be worse off than the people we're trying to help.

On a personal note, I'd have to be frank and let you know I'm more inclined to help my local co-op by donating parts to them. That way I'm helping at least some people my community and I can deliver the parts over to them by bike instead of paying a shipping company to burn fuel in order to get the parts to their destination.

I've got some spare tubes (performance brand, nothing special) for bikes I no longer have (or in one case, never did... how did I get a 26" tube?)

-- All have Schrader valves --
700x28-32 (or 27x 1 1/4") - 2 tubes
26x1.1-1.4" - 1 tube
24x1.75-2.1" - 1 tube
700x35-38 (or 27 x 1 3/8") - 4 tubes GONE

I'd prefer if you're in Philly since they aren't exactly expensive items, but go ahead and PM me anyway if you want 'em, I'd rather ship them than throw them out.

This is a good idea and there are certainly people who don't have a local coop or such to donate to. However, it is a lot easier for me to drop things off at our coop which has received a lot of my stuff including 4 good bicycles when we downsized to a condo. I have space for only 3 bikes now which has made me much more selective regarding projects. Getting rid of stuff is very liberating and giving it away is even better.

Good idea, but this forum already has too many stickies IMO. Maybe it's time to reevaluate them.
