That sucks. I'm afraid to leave my bike unlocked, even at the convenience store. But at McDs in downtown Phoenix in the mornings I see several bikes just parked on the sidewalk totally unlocked. As far as I know nobone's stolen one yet.

Live and learn. You obviously need a lock where you are.

Where abouts do you live? Been looking on craigslist?

You might want to get that other bike into the shop for a tune up

this is why i love the rear wheel lock. it probably would have resulted in the potential thief getting caught as well.

I know. He spent almost 5 seconds thinking about it before taking off with the bike. I didn't think thieves had that kind of indecision.

He's probably talking about something like the AXA Defender. Mounts to the frame and immobilizes the rear wheel.

The ones are usually see are welded to the frame and can't be removed. There's super small so the thief can hardly see them. It prevents this type of issue and no thief is going to carry a bicycle away in broad daylight.

Frame lock; quite often standard equipment on German and Dutch City bikes. They don't have to be expensive after market accessories. very useful for quick shopping stops.

Thanks. Are they usually just mounted in the back or do you see front and back? How are the integrated into US bikes?

Just on the rear. Don't know about bikes for US market without the built-in mounting plate found on European city bikes. I suspect the aftermarket locks come with some sort of mounting bracket. Even if the mounting bolts are removed, the lock cannot be removed from the wheel, when the lock is engaged/locked. Prevents ride away theft as shown in the video on this thread.

Boy, I've never seen those in Germany.

In a pinch, I'll disconnect the brakes and/or pop the chain off if I'm concerned.

They're usually on older bikes and not necessarily in a ring. Often they're welded to one of the rear triangles and pivot to reach between the spokes to the other rear triangle, where the non-pivoting end slides over a "bump" welded to the rear triangle. This results in a locked pin of about 1cm diameter passing through the wheel. They're usually locked/unlocked with a small key. Hugely popular on older Swedish/Danish city bikes (Monark). Most of these bikes will just be locked on the sidewalk outside the Stockholm supermarkets without even being locked to a stationary object. Most evenings, I would see 6-10 bikes outside the supermarket entrances ... we had four competing supermarkets at Fridhemsplan ... which led to a huge amount of bicycle pollution

Here you see if quite clearly in the rear wheel. Also check out that front fender coverage

maybe he wasn't even a professional thief. He saw the chance and went for it. In Spanish we have a proverb for this "la ocasión hace al ladrón"
something like "the opportunity makes the thief".
