Currently, I'm wearing a medium thickness fleece balaclava under a ventilated helmet. This morning, I felt the cold on my bald head (under the balaclava of course), especially on downhill runouts where I can be travelling up to 45km/h. I'm thinking of getting a helmet cover which will virtually eliminate wind through the helmet vents but also will cause my head to heat up more so maybe I'll wear a thinner balaclava and a buff or similar setup.

Does anyone else wear a helmet cover at this time of year and how do they like it?

I use a J&G helmet cover. Bright yellow, waterproof and has a loop in the back for a blinkie. Works great. Keeps head dry and warmer.

I'm also a bald helmet cover user. The only negative I can think of is possible interference with a helmet mounted headlight. No overheating issues with my setup.

Kelvin doesn't go below zero, 0Kelvin is -273C, it's not quite that cold here, EVER!

When things get below freezing, I dispense with the uber ventilated summer helmet and wear this over a thin Pearl Izumi beanie. When things drop below -7C or so I add a polar fleece headband and thin balaclava.

I will use a cover only in cold rain. If it's too cold I'll just wear a thicker wool hat.

I use a helmet light so a helmet cover won't work. I also live in Texas so it doesn't get that cold here. But the few times that it does, I just wear a fleece skull cap under my helmet.

I pretty much hop from the shower to the bike in the morning so I usually have damp/wet hair. When it gets to mid twenties
fahrenheit I use the goretex helmet cover and a thin pearl izumi head band. Very happy with the combo. Also during the warmer weather I keep the helmet cover in my bag for when I get caught in a downpour.

I use strips of painters tape to block the front vents when it gets cold. The beauty of that system is that you can remove some tape when it gets warmer during a ride.

You could always try stuffing kleenex in some of the more forward-facing vent-holes! I use the cover from my old helmet, which has netting over the top and solid weave on the sides. If that get's too cold, I can put a paper towel between the helmet and netting to whatever extent I'll need.

So far, with temps in 40s and 50s (Fahrenheit) here, just the cover has been enough to protect my scalp from chilling in the breeze, even while battling a headwind.

A cheap shower cap can do the job, you can cut a slit for the helmet lamp and still block the wind. Just don't let the fashion police see you...

I always wear a Under Armor skullcap under my balaclava. Seems to do the trick, but I haven't experienced weather that cold yet..

it was +4C this morning and my head was a little cold. a few people i saw riding had helmet covers and i may pick one up if it gets colder.

I wear a thin skull cap in temp down to -8C. Once I get moving, I generate plenty of heat to keep my head warm. I think the key is windblock but breathable and a little insulation.

Im OK with helmet covers on helmets

MEC and Showers Pass have a flap on the back
to keep rain from streaming down your collar and neck ..

I've utilized the Sheldon Brown method of packing tape. It does make a difference.

I also wear a headliner underneath my helmet.

I have a PI WxB helmet cover, but generally only wear it when its raining hard. It provides quite a bit of warmth as it cuts all the wind. I wear the Walz caps the most. The companys customer service and product quality are the best. For example, I have a big head and ordered the XL sized hats and they were just a tad too small. I called Walz and they told me to send them back and they made them bigger at no cost to me or shipping. In fact, I'm sending them back here soon to have the bills shortened a bit. Highly recommended.
