    I rode home last night after working some OT. It was dark and then it started to rain about halfway home. I was not expecting that. The cool part was that it was fairly warm and did not make the ride totally miserable. I think me riding in the dark makes my wife so nervous especially when I got home and she saw that I was soaked. :/

    It sure felt good to be pedaling though.

    bonus was listening to the rain pitter patter on the leaves and smelling the wet leaves as I rode. It made me remember my childhood. Funny how smells bring back memories!

    Let me tell.. The temp yesterday, and the day before was in the low 40s. I put on too much clothing.. When I reached the subway, I had to peel off..Put back on when exiting the subway. Went for a ride in the cold morning through the old streets. Nothing like it.. 5:50 am in the morning, dark streets, cold, and mucho lights on my bike. Great ride.. I cannot tell you how much cars give you respect when you are running bright lights. I ran across some ninjas out there, don't know how they do it.. At first light, here they come, still almost dark, no lights whatsoever...

    Anyway, when they are in front of me, they get lite up, I tell you that..

    People are getting more stupid and more selfish and I don't see it changing for the better.

    Don't blame the tire sellers, there's a difference between all season and all weather. I'm an all season bicyclist, but leave the bike home in ice and tough snow conditions (I can ride on snow, but reserve that for frozen lakes). That means I'm not an all weather cyclist.

    Likewise with car tires. All season tires make sense where snow is fairly rare, or the accumulations are small, or when roads are plowed and sanded or salted. For folks who are willing to leave the car home 3-4 days a year (if that) all seasons pay off in better tire life, and fuel economy. Obviously if roads are snow covered more than a few days a year, and/or driving in all conditions is a necessity, than you need a SNOW tire, studded if clear ice is also common.

    Had our local Cranksgiving event today, and decided to commute on my bike to and from the event (30 miles round trip) plus the 12 mile fun ride, so I got in 42+ miles today. Going up there was a constant 15-20 MPH headwind in which I averaged only about 10.9 MPH. Going home was awesome, 14.1 MPH average. Great event which raised over $500 for the Mid-South Food Bank, which purchases over $1500 worth of food for local charities.

    Actually, it was two days ago on Thursday. As I neared my site on the MUP, a POS compact sedan passed by me on the nearby road. One of the 20-something back seat occupants yelled, "Nice bike, Grandpa!"

    I had to laugh a little because I am a grandfather and yes, it is a nice bike:

    Cold! Coldest of the year or since I can recall: 24F/-4C slight headwind. I layered up and broke out the wool socks.

    Worst part was how long the building shower took to warm up.

    20F when I left this morning with a 5-10mph headwind. I added a sweatshirt and knit hat to my usual cold weather outfit and arrived at work pleasantly warm. I pumped up the tires a bit higher than normal while in the garage; I think it helped.

    Only one idiot driver on the ride in. A lady in an old SUV decided to pass me while I was signaling to move into the straight lane approaching a red light. I yielded to her and pulled in behind (not wanting to get run over on a legal technicality). No sooner than I pulled in behind her, she pulled over into the right turn lane to turn right, without signaling of course. *sigh* But it's only cyclists that break traffic laws.

    Interesting fact, all-seasons are a compromise all-around. If you're going to install snow tires, then your other set should be summer tires (which are good on wet and dry pavement but not mud or light snow). There's a video on Youtube where someone compares stopping distance and handling for all three types with simulated conditions.

    warmer again. 7c/45f.

    took the toeclips off the pedals because of a slight accident I had last Friday evening. I saw the ice (the lane must not get any sun) and tried to break gently, which I did, but couldn't get my foot out of the pedal quickly enough to stop from going down on the my knee. Now I had a bruise under by knee cap and ripped bar tape and some ankle scratches

    but I rode in today after taking the clips off and just leaving the pedals ... i do miss them on the hills

    otherwise, business as usual.

    I run winter tires (mandatory in Germany) and summer tires on the Audi.

    The summer tires are great except in the rain.

    The winter tires allow the FWD Audi excellent control in the snow ... but impose a roughly 15% fuel consumption penalty!

    I didn't have space for both, so I roll on the winter tires year round in the UK.

    Cold morning, -12° celcius, -20° with the windchill factor. Swirling winds.

    Tonight should be a pain in the ass with the same temperature but a strong 20-40 kmh headwind.

    23F this morning and first ride of the year with studs (put them on yesterday). Holy crap, I felt like I was riding a log. I know I'll get used to it as in the past but days like this could convince me I really am crazy. Probably good timing since snow is forecast for tonight and the next couple days.

    As I was struggling to keep a pace I started wondering why there aren't studded non racing motorcycle tires? I was dreaming of riding a powered vehicle!

    IMO it's a few things. One is a difference in the culture, around here in general I think motorcycles do even more toy duty than bicycles do. The other thing is that most people don't want to take their fancy-faired motorcycle out on the ice even if they have studs, just too much damage happens even if you tip over. Finally, it's too hard to stay warm on a motorcycle unless you are running full heated gear. Most motorcycles don't have the electric capacity to run all that heated gear and most people don't own it anyway.

    Just for the body heat alone I don't ride the motorcycles much below ~40F, ice notwithstanding. I'm not having a bad time on the bicycle at ~15F though.

    It's much more simple. The risk and consequences of dumping a motorcycle are more serious. It's one thing to have a bike slide out from under you and bruise a hip or shoulder. It's quite another to have a motorcycle do this at 50+mph.

    Bach when I rode motorcycles, I'd even lay up under an overpass if caught in a sudden squall. Rain added another layer of risk, that was acceptable if necessary, but nice to avoid if possible. The thought of hitting ice at speed, would be enough to keep me off motorcycles altogether if in an area where it's common.

    BTW- at my age, with stiffer joints, possibly more brittle bones, and plenty of scar tissue on knees and elbows, I try to avoid even minor spills to the extent I can. So some of what was reasonable 40 years ago is now beyond my threshold of acceptable. Though if the ponds freeze over and friends ask me to join them in some slip and slide rides I'm still dumb enough to go.

    Managed to ride to work today. Around -7C/19F, quite cold on the face at first. Tough slog through some residential areas where there hasn't been enough traffic to really pack the snow down. Arterial roads were okay, though bike lanes are now non-existent because that's where the plows pile the snow. Trails have been plowed and seem like they're well trafficked.

    Assuming I make it home okay, today I will hit 3000 km total cycling for the year. That's nothing compared to some of you guys, and well below my own previous years' totals, but under the circumstances this year, I'm happy with what I accomplished.

    I had that thought just after I posted, lol. If you check out the adventure bike forums, there's a few "brave" souls out there who are personally studding tires to go on their 100hp, 600 pound touring beasts. Things have the potential to go literally sideways very quickly with such a machine! I'm finding that in winter bicycle conditions I'm rarely getting above 12 mph or so, at my age I think I can probably handle a fall or 2 at that speed.

    Having ridden over and gone down on black ice, I can tell you that it's no fun at all. It doesn't feel like a typical bike fall, or slide out on a turn. When you hit black ice at speed the bike shoots out from under you like a cartoon banana shooting out of the skin. The time interval between knowing you have a problem and hitting the pavement can be near zero. Now your riding, now you;re sliding.

    On the bright side, this happens in the winter when you're well padded so there's no road rash, and the impact itself is less than it would be in the summer. If the ice patch is long enough, you don't even rip your clothes, though it isn't fun either way.

    My fear of black ice isn't the fall, but the slide path, and following traffic.

    This morning's commute set a personal best record of coldest ride ever. I was all set to wimp out this morning and take the bus in, but then I overslept. I didn't have time for the bus, so I bundled up with all the cold weather gear I had and rode off into the 15F degree New England morning. No wind and sunny skies definitely helped. The worst part of the commute was the denser traffic due to my late departure. Looks like I'm good until the snow falls.

    39F with a 37F dewpoint (RH 96%) so you could see the mist trying to form over the river but it was clear and calm and beautiful.

    Crazy weather with severe thunderstorms followed by mid 20*C days with very high humidity... seems that I'm constantly soaked either by the rain or the humidity on sunny days.

    The nice thing about today's commute was the tailwind on the way back. I flew on my 3-speed IGH, keeping up with moderate traffic and passing other commuters as well (I guess my girth acted like a sail ).

    17f this morning. 33f and p/c this aftn. I'll have to pay attention to the weatherman tonight as to whether or not I'll have to put the studs on. I have them mounted to another set of rims, so it only takes me less than 10 minutes to switch wheels. less hassle and less wear and tear.

    Waiting for this big storm to arrive. Warmer today 37F/3C. I was thinking I should just invest in a single winter riding coat instead of the mutliple layers I have.

    Last night was very slow with a full frontal Wind of 40-50 kmh, took me 1h26 to get home, my worst chrono ever on a night without snow.
    This morning was good because I had the same Wind. took 59min for the same ride.
    A lot warmer then yesterday at -1° celcius.
    They forecast 5-10 cm of snow for the night so I will probably have to take the van for the rest of the week

    30F and calm - snow was forecast last night and not a flake. No disrespect to all who got pounded but I was kind of disappointed - wanted to ride my studs on something (so been seeking out frozen puddles)
