Mind the gap! Hydraulic brake piston closed

Was on my way home Friday when I began losing control and realized my front tyre had gone flat. I was less than a mile way so I decided to endure the "walk of shame" home. The next day was dry so I also removed both wheels to do some maintenance. A simple case of too much going on and I pulled my brake lever with the front wheel still removed. Stupid me, the brake pads were completely closed.

I'm quite proud I was able to sort this and thought I'd post it for posterity. I used a kitchen knife to get inbetween the closed pads. At this point I had a gap but the pistons are still pushed out so it will rub the disc rotor. So next I took 2 plastic credit cards and wedged a flat head screwdriver between them. This pushed the pistons right the way back and job done.

Good, the plastic card kept from damaging the friction material.. planning ahead..
plastic disk ' keeper' in the patch kit,

fills the space while the wheel is out.. 1 should have come with the brakes

when i put new disc pads on the front of my SAAB 96, I bought a bigger screwdriver ..

Probably the best way one could use their credit cards.

Why not remove the pads and then fully retract the pistons?
