Any fly-fishers around here?

Just went this past weekend and going again this coming weekend. Both at lakes. I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to mount PVC rod holders vertically on my rear rack; I've seen plenty of horizontally mounted DIY rod holders, but my 7' and 8' rods would strike tree limbs if mounted that way. I suppose I could just disassemble the rods, but that's a pain (to me anyways...laziness) and I would like an option for one-piece rods in the future.

Yeah, I make my own bamboo rod.
I think you have horizontal and vertical backward in the OP.
I think PVC and zip ties may be your best bet.
Better is to break the rods down and assemble then stream side.

I'd break it down and use rubber bands to hold the sections together, under the top tube and along side the headtube.

That's what I do.

Sure did - I'm looking to mount the holders horizontally, i.e. parallel to the ground. I'm also trying to give myself an option for future 1pc rods.

I would do that, but I usually take a spinning rod with me as well, and the reel handle would hit my leg if I mounted it anywhere other than behind the main triangle.

Fabric velcro strips sewn to elastic strap sections, break the rod down and put it into a tube, use the elastic/velcro straps to secure the tube to the bike someplace. If you really want to strap on a 1-piece rod then sew up a long sock for it lest you find yourself snagging branches and twigs with the exposed line between the rod guides.

A 3 to 5-piece rod can be strapped to the handlebars sideways leaving the rear rack for vest or lunch or net or float-tube.

I really hope to get back into fly fishing this year again, the last few years have been hectic with job searching and family stuff so any fishing took a backseat to everything else.

I think there's a thread on the site here, might be in a different section, with a lot of fly fishing and other fishing photos with bikes in the images. (Might have been a bicycle thread on a fly fishing site, or a fly-fishing/bicycling thread on a photo site, but somewhere there is a thread combining fishing and bicycling, someplace....)

Lots of tourists and tyros drive their SUVs heck bent to over fished locations in our area, so many are blithering idiots. Fairly late in the fall a trio followed a logging road to a stream, when it was heading toward dark, they started out, only to find the logging road gate locked. No cell service, not sure exactly where they were, temp dropping toward freezing. Finally one headed out on foot, after a while he got touch of cell service, enough to call for help, but he couldn't tell the authorities where he was. A very smart woodsman finally was able to figure about where they were, contacted the logging co to get some keys and finally found these guys well after dark. Often ride my bike to less molested fishing spots to float a small dry fly with a short rod and some 3 wt line, split my rod into two sections, attach it to the top tube with two pant cuff ties, let it hang over the back tire.

Just cut some PVC and use a few U-bolts. Or, mount the pvc on a hunk of plywood and mount that to the rack. I had a pvc surboard rack that I used a lot, it was really just a few right angle couplings, pipe, and some hose clamps.
