Car insurance when you mostly bike
So basically, I don't see why I should have to pay 2 thousand dollars a year on car insurance when I barely use the damn thing. Is there any really cheap insurance out there? I currently have geico car insurance

Talk to your insurance agent. I got a discount in my policy due to low mileage, which I was able to document. You can always change your policy so it has a higher deductible or liability-only coverage, but that leaves you more vulnerable in the event of an accident. It also pays to shop around for insurance, even if you policy is with Geico. When I did price comparisons, Geico was far from the cheapest, even though their advertisements would lead you to believe they are bargain basement. My insurance company (Kemper) almost doubled our rates in January, and I shopped around and got a new policy with State Farm with better coverage for about the same price I had been paying.

I called and told the insurance agent I hardly drive, so they asked me a rough mileage/year that I intend to put on the car.
Reduced my premium by a few hundred dollars.

I recommend metromile -- its the only mileage based insurance in the usa. Now that I am car lite again (after 2 years) I pay $120 every 6 months! I drive 20-50 miles a month mostly just to keep the heap of junk running. Selling it is pointless since it has more utility value to me than the amount of money I could get from selling a 12 year old car (gen 1 prius).

See if you can get RV coverage for the minimal miles you drive. Geico used to offer this. You will have to prove the miles.
Maybe something like Progressive with their little electronic device would be better.

Portland has pay as you drive insurance.
I refuse to use it because they require GPS tracking devices on the car.
No thanks big brother!

Insurance companies have a pretty strict definition of 'barely', like <3k miles/yr

Just to make it even more confusing.. IF you do have car insurance you want to have a high PIP and uninsured motorist on the policy. having this has saved a few of my friends asses when it comes to hospital bills and such. If you don't have a car I'd get some suppelemental insurance for personal injury.. we don't want to get hit or injured but make sure you have a plan for it.
Make sure you talk to your agent but your drivers insurance should cover accidents on the bike also.

+1 also good if you hit someone. And yeah your PIP covers you on your bike if the driver who hits you either doesn't have it or it gets maxed out. So getting max PIP for yourself will delay the onset of bills that go unpaid while liability gets sorted out.

The insurance company we use in the US asks for the mileage every time we activate and deactivate the policy (we keep a vehicle for extended trips there).
I suppose it would be easy enough to be economical with the truth but if the insurance company sees our claim that it had 48000 miles on it but then the annual inspection recorded it was really 67000 miles they might ask a few questions, and likewise if we told them the mileage was 48000 and crashed a month later with the odometer showing 93000 they might invalidate our policy since we had clearly been untruthful with them.

$2000 a year? Wow, time to switch to someone else. For both my wife and I, with two cars, we pay about $1000 a year from Allstate. And that's not minimum coverage.
My wife does get lower rates due to only driving 3000-5000 miles a year (we always take my car on long trips). It saved us about $150 a year.

Young + male = high risk in the insurance biz. value of car, and Location of residence.
and even parked there is break in and being hit by someone else to insure against.
Friend, OTOH rural , 60 year old woman , and 40 years of clean driving record,
operating a old rusty brown nissan truck, off street parking,
she pays less than $200 a year..

Unfortunately Progressive requires cars newer than 1996 to use that thing. I wish I could send them a photo of my odometer and the sticker from my last oil change (a year ago) with last year's mileage as proof that I rarely drive my personal vehicle. (I do drive a public safety vehicle for my second job, so it's not like I'll get out of practice.)

My sister-in-law, for a while, couldn't afford to replace her car so she went without for a couple of years. However, she was told (by her insurance agent, so take it with a grain of salt) that if she let her insurance lapse and then down the line, bought a new car and bought new insurance, she would be considered a new driver and the rates would be based on a new driver so she continued to pay a minimum.

Who are you with? I've never had an at-fault accident (was spun off the road once by a driver who fled the scene) never been pulled over, never made a claim. I drive about 1k a year and my car is worth at most $1k (94 Sentra). I've shopped and haggled and I can't get anything less than $200/6 months.

My insurance was reduced almost by half the second year, when I showed them that I don't use it for commuting and had low milage on it. They balked at first, but finally came around. Liability only - don't have an accident.
If you have some traffic tickets, recent accidents, live near higher risk traffic, or are a younger driver the rates are higher. Go online and get some quotes, and speak with your agent. If geico won't work with you then be ready to switch, but don't try to fib to them. They all have access to the same information, and they know the formulas and what the competition is quoting.

Unless you run a reputable open source phone OS (e.g. not the android or OSX that came on your fōn) there is a good chance that your phone GPS-data is already backed up and stored somewhere (ready and waiting for Big Brother to subpoena it). Just sayin'
