Planning to attempt commute in Nashville area

Just moved (a month ago) to Hermitage, TN, and now that DST is upon us, I have more evening light for the ride home. So, is it worth taking the greenway / bikeway (Stones River) the 2 and a half or so miles from Bell Rd to Stewarts Ferry PK, or are there better surface streets where I can hammer down.

Suggest you check with a local bike shop or bike club. They'll have someone who knows the area and can suggest the best routes.

This is solid advice. Also recommend taking some time on the weekend when traffic is light to check out the proposed path. Moreso to get familiar with which turn to take and prefered lighter traffic streets. Just to seek a commute to avoid the left turn accross 3 lanes of traffic with a line of cars behind you...

I live in Nashville and commute from Crieve Hall (west of Brentwood) to downtown. My commute is mostly back roads or bike laned roads, but I do ride on Franklin Road for roughly 2.5 miles. I am not too familier with that area other than riding on the rode around Hamilton Creek MTB trails, but I would say it would be worth it to ride the greenway to not have to ride on the roads in rush hour traffic. I would ride out of my way if I had a greenway to ride on.

There was a guy that used to post here quite frequently about his trips in and around Nashville- nashcommguy. He hasn't been around in a while, though...

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I've already leveraged local bike shop types (the nice one in Hendersonville) but they only know what I already know) Ok. I've driven round some of the streets last week, but darned if it's. . . drivers suck around here. Just suck.

It's note exactly a perfect source of information, but have you tried Google bike maps? It's far from perfect, but it's a starting point. Other than that suggestion, I can't help you really. Don't know the area. I would love to have a greenway on my commute though.

Aside from Google's Bike route (still in beta last time I checked), you might check out bikely as well. Quite a few results when I plugged Nashville into the search box, but I don't know if any of them will be of any use- don't know the area (other than I-40 passing through to Lebannon, TN and points east).

You don't have a lot of choices in that area. Stones River Greenway is much much nicer than the roads. It does meander a bit and has some steep hills. I wish I could be more helpful than that, but I live on the other side of town and don't ride out that way very often.
