I find fellow commuters enjoy watching a commuting Fred dust some geeks. See above posts for evidence. I don't think Triathletes would take it the same way. If any wander in here (unlikely) then they are looking for trouble and on their own.

I don't know that I've ever seen such a pathetic and embarrassing admission before.

If there ever was a "C" type personality, I am it, but yeah, crushing NASCAR biked powerrangers up looong hills on my single speed
or passing them in traffic on my humble little folding bike with my lunch bungeed to the back does offer moment of gratuitous smuggery

I have no problem with it posted here. I thought it was funny. I don't do tri's or wear skin suits or aero helmets or anything like that, but I do were Lycra bike shorts on my road bike, just because they're more comfortable. But I don't get offended or angry when someone passes me, because I know I'm slow as balls. Joey's video was still pretty entertaining, though.

I enjoyed your website, but... Pot, meet kettle? You are spending big bucks on a wheelset, but you insist on wearing clothes that flap around in the wind. Surely it is a 20 times better investment to wear a skin suit and ride on a sturdy but inexpensive wheel? At the speeds you are probably doing (near 40km/h?) you are pretty much guaranteed to gain 2km/h just from eliminating the drag.

Obviously it's your choice but I'd feel better if I passed them in lycra tights on my citybike than in thrift store clothes on my obviously very well-equipped vintage frame.

He's a cheetah chasing antelopes and the clothes are for effect. He might gain 2km/h with lycra on an hour long race but he doesn't need to maintain his pace for that long.

If he gets a thrill out of catching these guys, more power to him but they're out there training for fast 40 mile times (after swimming a 1/2 mile or more and before running about 15) which is entirely different from a 1 or 2 mile sprint.

I think that Joey's video thread certainly belongs here and I enjoyed my choice to watch the vid, read the thread, and post. It is good entertainment for commuters and those that live by bike everyday. We have a couple of places in austin where many of the weekend warriors/rec riders/triathletes go to train on the weekends. Of course, nearly all load up their fancy race bikes on their cars, dress in their finest spandex, and drive their bikes to the Veloway to ride the 3.1 mile loop. Very confusing to me. Just like driving your car to go run. Anyway, tis fun to ride over to the veloway with a fellow commuter cyclist and/or pedicabber on my cyclocross bike or early 80's univega sportour and smoke a few laps. Haven't done so in quite some time. Joey, your vid has inspired me to get back out there. And, it is a very nice RT bike ride out to the veloway training grounds and back.

Another thing I have fun with is starting somewhere in south austin on a weekend morning, headed downtown. Hop on our main n/s bike route and see how many weekend roadie warriors I can pass on a 5 or 6 mile run into downtown, rolling but mostly downhill, and usually on my converted mtn bike w/ panniers and fully decked out for commuting. Fun sport as well. Similar technique to Joey's description, in part. I pedal like all get out on the uphills and particularly the downhills, where others are inclined to rest. Extra mass of my bike and the big apples really help on the downhills and carrying my momentum through some of the rolling hills. Breathe a bit on the flats. Some of the looks and comments are priceless.

Lots of fun. Thanks for sharing the vid.

If entertaining your "family" here is the purpose of your posts, why not post pictures and videos of playful kittens, scantily clad (but tastefully posed) women, and videos of Mardi Gras festivities? Might be something for me to see then and it would be just as related to bicycle commuting since it would "entertain" your commuter "family."

Because it was related to cycling and it was a well done video. While it may not have been directly about commuting, besides you, who cares? Have you ever sat around the dinner table at Thanksgiving and talked about things other than being thankful?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting many of your posts, but you come across as angry and spiteful, lying in wait with answers to posts that don't sit right in your craw.

Keep on riding and relax a little.

You know... it takes all kinds. I'm just glad there are people out there - just like the triathletes posted in your video - that are trying to make a difference in their lives, instead of plopping on the couch and staring at the television.

I've gone from recreational cyclist, to triathlete, to training with a cycling team & racing, to commuting, and everything in between, in all my years of using bicycles. Out of all of the bicycle 'activities' I have done, commuting has by far the most snobbery.

FYI - cherry picking is easy. There are "geeks" as you phrase it, in my area, that could out-ride 99% of riders in my area, from cyclists training to race, to other triathletes that are out to keep themselves healthy, and to the snobby commuters that have a hard time saying "good morning". It really does take all kinds... and it makes me happy to see all of them outside and enjoying life in a different way than most will ever understand.

Don't feed the trolls, JB. Even though I'd be scalped on the first lap, the video is very funny. Maybe I should shave my head?

I ride with a few guys who enter races and occasionally place high enough to take home some cool (expensive) prizes. No one is sponsored. Weekend warriors. I have no trouble hanging with them on training rides. I won't be beating them in any races. So I already know that outcome. Therefore I just hit the training routes and try to pass as many riders as I can while keeping them from passing me. Way easier than entering a race. I can jump out there on a whim after work.
No, what I'm saying is, you're passing guys who are training for a purpose. Maybe it's a zone 3 ride for them, or zone 4, or some power target or whatever. You passing them doesn't mean anything. You're not 'scalping' them, or 'beating' them, or anything else. They're not thinking about you. They're thinking about their workout, or their next workout, or the race on the weekend.

While Joey calls it scalping, its more like punked. I don't pretend to understand why Joey does it - but I see it in the same category as the hidden camera shows. Its just entertainment, nothing more. For those who found the video and site funny, here is another one:

Joey - we need better videos.

Lakeshore drive is the best for me. 5 miles one way.

Mississippi River Trail (MRT) is 20+ miles each way and well populated with cyclists too. The distance gives the geeks a better chance to re-pass me. Eventually.

No offense to the OP, but is this really that important to you, or is the whole thing meant to poke fun at wannabe racers (including yourself)?

Lol - the other day riding home with my boss, we were coming up on a guy on an older steel road bike, with loaded rear panniers. He knew we'd been behind him for a bit, so you could tell he was cranking up his pace.

Me: "Let's step it up, this guys been in front of us to long"
Boss: "Do you really get satisfaction over passing someone riding a loaded up road bike?"
Me: "Absolutely"
Boss: "Hehehe.. yeeaahh, me too"

Of course, although I can't go a whole year without getting passed anymore. So far this spring I got "bagged" twice. Once by a roadie at the Lakefront (the place in the vid) who snuck up on me somehow, and once by a aerobar-leaner on the 20 mile river path against a stiff headwind. I held him off for roughly 10 miles but inch by inch he reeled me in. When he finally caught up I offered him a low-five handshake and he took it. He knew he wanted to bag me same as I knew he wanted to catch me and I did my best to keep it from happening. That's how it works on these two courses. We BOTH got a killer workout in the process only he got in his car at the river and I had to bike home another 8 miles sucking on a GU packet. Both riders were easily half my age and once past me couldn't (or wouldn't) create any gap beyond 100 feet. Rubbing my nose in it maybe.

Now and then a true sponsored rider blows me off the road while looking like they aren't even trying. I can't do 30+ mph for more than a few seconds without a fierce tailwind. So those who can will kill me every time. Luckily not many of them hang around the Lakefront. And the short 5-mile course does not give a fast rider enough time to catch up from behind. I almost never get passed at the Lakefront unless I am letting someone go by so they enter the camera field of view. This is how the guy who flatted in the vid got past me - I waited on him so I could make a video.
