Wildlife Commute Morning

I'm in Billings, MT so I usually see some wildlife on my commutes. However, yesterday was even better. Started off in the dark and saw a small animal on the road. I was talking to keep it moving and as I got closer, saw the white strip down it's back - eek, skunk. Decided to ride on the other side of the road. About a mile further saw 4 deer on the side of the road. Whistled a little so they saw me and they moved off the road. Then another deer who decided to run in front of me. Then another mile, 2 ducks in the bike lane. Never saw ducks on the bike lane before. They decided to fly away when I got close. After there just a few rabbits running back and forth.

It was a good ride (especially as I didn't get sprayed by the skunk).

Happy biking, John

i love when i see animals on my rides, saw a turtle in the woods path today, that was a new one

even though im in nyc i see swans, pelicans, cranes, 100000 other kinds of birds, chipmunks, woodchucks, deer and all the other regular bland suburbian wildlife

its great when the deer run with you, especially when youre crankin along at 20mph and theyre just bounding along effortlessly
only seen 1 buck though, guess they know better than the does to stay away from the roads

lately theres been this goose that stands on the same corner every day, no matter what time i pass and he doesnt move when i blast past him. wonder what hes up to? i think i should give it a name

My fare so far has been road crossing squirrels (of course), one possum, one raccoon, ducks, geese, more geese, lots of geese, wild turkeys, one entirely too close encounter with a turkey buzzard, and lots of birds on the river which I thought were egrets, but which I've learned are actually American White Pelicans.

There is also a coyote which I've often seen in the neighborhood. They lose all their dignity, when one sees them in one's back yard doing the butt-buff shuffle on one's lawn...

In El Paso there's no wildlife in the streets, unless you count taxi drivers lol. I used to live in Golden, Colorado and commuted into Lakewood (these are towns just west of Denver) and it was not unusual to see red foxes on the bike paths, especially Bear Creek. They come out and run next to the bike. It was scary the first 400 times it happened, but ya get used to it. ♪ ♫

A buddy of mine was riding down a trail when he and a bobcat came around a corner and almost hit eachother. This scared the **** our of both of them, and they both took off at top speed. The problem is that they picked the same direction. He was riding right next to the bobcat for a few seconds until it ducked into the brush.

It's mating season and they often stand sentry when they have eggs nearby. Gets to be a problem on the golf course as they're pretty territorial. I'd give him a wide berth as they'll attack anything near the nest. We had to temporarily close a small road that ran between a building and a holding pond as the geese nesting there began to attack cars that drove by.

Night rides on the MUP here reveal an unbelievable number of city raccoons and opposums. Ducks like to lay in the middle of the path in the night for some reason (warmth?). There are also quite a few coyotes who come out of the woodwork at night.

At camp last summer, I scared a yearling bear out of a tree at the side of the road and it too ran parallel to me for a few yards before turning into the woods. Scared both of us: not sure if the pile of **** in the road was mine or his.

It's alligator mating season here... and there's at least one 8+ foot bull in a pond next to the MUP that I frequent.
