Geek Hunt Extravaganza 2.1 will not disappoint! (VIDEO)

As promised last month with my "Teaser" video here at Bike Forums, the latest Commuter Fred vs. Triathlete video is complete.

Why is this in the Commuting thread?

1. Commuting keeps me in shape for geek hunting. My Long Haul Trucker weighs in between 40-50 lbs on any given day and is set up exactly like my road bike. Without commuting, there is no geek hunting or this video.

2. I was biking "on my way" to work during the making of this video wearing work clothes - cargo shorts, long sleeve shirt, and a backpack. Like taking the long way to work on a lovely day.

3. Every hard-core commuter I know personally (and many here) love to "hate" triathletes. Previous entries in the Commuting forum have been popular and sprout spirited responses and lengthy threads.

OK...here it is: (9 minutes)

http://vimeo.com/66991486

"A Triathlon was taking place in New Orleans on Sunday May 26, so I hit Lakeshore Drive the day before for a little Geek hunting before work. The Lakefront was totally infested with Iron-men and Iron-women shaking down their equipment before the race. Thanks to their competitive nature, I had no problem finding racers to "Play the Game" with me."

Inflated backpack; I *love* it!

Wait a minute! Do I see CF brake levers on your bike???

Always thinking of new ways to disturb the comfortable.

Trust me, to those Cervelo-riders I look like an old man on a Schwinn Varsity.

Dang wide angle lens. I did my best. Try the Pause button. That worked for me.

jyl 05-26-13 08:35 AM

No, you didn't try your best, you needed to do some dedicated wheel sucking on some of those Tri chicks :-)

Another prop would be a long white beard. Really mess with their heads.

unterhausen 05-26-13 09:35 AM

I feel a little bad when they drop their friends

GamblerGORD53 05-26-13 10:32 AM

Now that's impressive, nice ride.

Did anybody say HI ???

I say "Good morning" or "Gotta love a tail wind" to most of them. Most respond, then hit the gas if they can. Or just give up.

I ring my Incredibell often before getting close enough to say Good Morning. If you see my right hand leave the brake hood and the rider look back, I rang the bell. It just does not get picked up very well by the camera. I could add a sound effect like any other movie maker would.

You can see my shadow talking to the last group of roadies. I knew two of them and gave them the "Good morning ladies" line as I passed, knowing they were not going to bother chasing me during their Giro cool-down lap. That got some spirited responses but not a single "Hi". I try to avoid those guys. I am just some pesky fly to be jeered at. I was shocked that a group of 4 picked up the chase that lasted about 2 miles until one caught me.

When the roadie (during the credits) caught me I stuck out my left hand for a "low five" hand slap which he accepted. Then he told me his legs already had 50 hard miles that morning. I replied "I know".

So everyone is pretty friendly unless they have ear buds. Then I just give a friendly wave as I go past.

Great hunting Joey! :D

Nice work Joey... I like how that guy in the blue kept looking back to see if you were still there. LOL.

I would have been panting under a shady tree after about 3 minutes of that.

Very enjoyable. I am an older, overweight commuter, and i have done 3 (short) triathlons - a "Try-a-Tri" and two Sprint Tris. In those races, I may have surprised an occasional over-equipped, wannabe serious athlete, by passing them on my folder, but most of the aerobar, disc-wheel types easily pass me. And even if I do pass someone in kit, they inevitably run me down pretty quickly on foot.

Where I do my sniping is in the charitable Ride for Heart (50 or 75 km), which some people treat as a race, where in the final straight 6 km I move to the left lane and overtake everybody I can, including a few other left laners. Of course this is a mixed group of fit and not fit riders, only some of whom are "competing". The most elite riders have long since moved far out of reach.

But the basic premise, that we 'Fred" commuters may be fitter than people expect, is true even at my modest level.

Other than the shapely Tri-gals my favorite part is at the top of the bridge. You can't really see it in the video due to the wide angle making everything look smaller, but at the very top, after he stomped up the bridge hard as he could, he glanced over his right shoulder, then looked again - I saw a "gahdammit" look on his face that was priceless. I got a great shot of adrenaline from that look.

Not many will argue that passing people is just plain fun. Getting passed...not so much. Gotta find your fun on a bike where you can get it. My problem is a general lack of motivation to just go fast. So I created "The Game". I would NEVER have done three laps on the Lakefront yesterday if not for tricking myself into getting motivated. I am usually one-and-done out there it is sooo boring. Getting back 5 miles to the "Start" point against that wind three times was a grind too.

Thanks for the Kudos.

alan s 05-26-13 04:15 PM

No one you passed was actually racing. Enter a race and see how you do. Liked the music.

Would seem counter-productive. What I think Joey has been trying to show, through his video, is that you can get some exercise, training and fun out of making people who drive 10 miles to a location, to ride, then load up their bikes again, to drive 10 miles (and probably stop at Starbucks) home, get pissed off because they aren't the fastest in every aspect of riding on their $8k< bikes.

Total disclosure: $8,000+ is both sarcasm and exaggerated for effect. There are, probably, people in that video with $2,000 invested in just their wheelset though.

longpatterned 05-26-13 05:22 PM

97% of cyclists will never race, but will hit the gas when you come up to pass them. Especially if your on a bike they consider inferior. Joey's bike is a sleeper to most. It was build to quietly knife through boat loads of carbon fiber with wicked French bearings. The levers are the only carbon part b/c Chorus 11 levers have the best features for the $$$. Cinelli Supercorsa frame is no joke, but steel is often looked down on despite it's awesome characteristics. Truth is the Tri-geeks don't stand a chance unlike the first group of giro roadies. Frankly it's scary to ride near tri-geeks, they're like Ray Charles with a Porsche and a charley horse cramp. Still, the film is well done again bro... Suckas to the side!

Thanks man. Especially for saving me some typing and bragging about my own bike. You pretty much nailed it. It is a secret weapon for sure which has allowed me to aggravate a higher tier of tri-geeks. But I can't be too uppity about how much people spend on bikes anymore.

Can't believe I never heard that before. Sounds like a good video title.

I did this race once. http://nebc.us/cbtt/

Thought I was fast, but found out for sure. See if there is something in your area similar, and report back. Until then, it's all hot air. Understand you are having a little fun, but a reality check never hurts.

Santaria 05-26-13 08:36 PM

Ah, I thought you did this on your LHT, not a Cinelli custom?

Dood...if I was THAT strong I WOULD race! The Trucker is my trainer.

That looks pretty cool. From time to time I get called upon to be a training partner for local racers who have been away from the sport or gained some unwanted weight. I already know my place. Something about a guy with zero bike racing credentials making you puke on a training ride gets people motivated to clean up the diet and ride more.

In high school I was force to run track. Won some ribbons, medals, and trophies all of which I deposited in the nearest trash can on the way out of the stadium. I never cared about formal competition even when I was doing well at it.

Love it; brings back good memories of the Giro and the lakefront races. I spent a lot of time training on the lakefront.
