Secure Water Bottle Cage for Powerade/Gatorade bottle?
 

Started biking to work this year. Tired and not watching closely enough, I plowed into the side of a curb that I had thought dipped down - but didn't. Somehow - miraculously, or through bike handling skills developed mountain biking - my bike actually made it over the curb without an accident. The only bad thing that happened is my Powerade bottle flew out of the water bottle holder and onto the ground.

However, I'd rather not even risk that again. Wondering if anyone has experience with a water bottle holder that would securely hold a Powerade or Gatorade bottle, or also a regular water bottle, even if the bike hits some pretty rough bumps.

The only thing that looks like it would do it that I've found so far is the Topeak Modula Cage II -

Wondering if anyone has personal experience with Powerade or Gatorade bottles, in that cage or in another cage...

I have one similar to this, never had a store bottle slip since it expands to grip them.

Pour the gatorade or powerade into a regular water bottle...problem solved

Gatorade and powerade also come powdered.. so you could just make them in the water bottle too.

I've been using the twist-top Gatorade sports bottles as my water bottles for YEARS now, they fit perfectly in a standard cage.

Yeah, the problem there is that I don't usually bring powerade/gatorade except for longer rides, and once you put something sugary in a water bottle you start to get mold issues growing in the bottle. I mean...maybe if I sat down and calculated it out, it would be worth it to buy the powder, mix it in a bottle, and throw out a bottle every year...but so far I've just been buying a 6 pack (or maybe 2 six packs) every year then I don't have to throw out a water bottle. Plus it's easy to grab going out the door, don't have to take extra time to mix it.

Lol, all I can say is that they bounced out of mine...though maybe I'll try your Gatorade bottle and see if it fits better, thanks.

Wanted to say thanks for the suggestion. While there's a little bit of a gap at the bottom of the cage, it looks like the Gatorade bottle has a far better "lip" for securing itself into the cage. I'm going to try that - thanks!

put a toe strap under the water bottle cage , as you install it,

then you can use the strap to hold the bottle secure .

I cut the top off an old (& cheap) regular water bottle right at the point where it would hold the bottle tight. Left a bit of a pik sticking up so it would press on the upper part of the cage.

Just wanted to write back about what I found.

DX-MAN's suggestion was good - the Gatorade Twist top bottle fits a lot better into every cage I tried it with. It's a wider bottle which is closer to a normal water bottle cage in width and girth so most cages hold onto it about as well as a regular water bottle. It is a little short.

Seems to hold onto **everything**, though. Water bottle, gatorage bottle, skinnier powerade bottle - I tried out several cages including the Tacx Tao, the Specialized Rib Cage, and several others at the shop, and the Zee was the only cage that actually gripped the Powerade bottle (the Topeak Modula cage also looked like it would probably do the job, as it's adjustable to grip skinnier bottles, but I wasn't able to try it as it was out of stock at my local REI).

Specialized also sells a water bottle, the Purist Mo'Flo Bottle (they also sell other purist bottles) that claims "Purist infusion shields the bottle from odor, stains and mold to keep your water pure and your bottle clean", so I'm going to try that as well.

I don't know if it will really work or not yet though - the cap on the top looks like it's difficult to completely clean out, so we'll see. But supposedly it keeps mold from growing (my concern with using a water bottle for sports drinks).

Also the powder is cheaper than the bottled stuff. You can also control the ratio with the powder as I prefer my sport drink a bit more diluted than normal.

Mold? Never had that problem. With washing after every use I've only had a couple bottles discolour on the inside over the years.

um why not just buy a bike water bottle.

Also agree with powder..on a reallllly long ride you can carry a ziploc with more powder so when you refill the bottle along the way you can make a new bottle of gatorade with it.

Mold in the bottles eh? I have a thing called a bottle brush... I suppose if I left my bottles to fester for weeks or something I wouldn't be able to clean them properly, but F that.

1 pkg unsweetened Koolaid (or other brand)
1/2 C sugar (I heap the 1/2 C measuring spoon)
1/3 tsp sea salt (better but regular salt is fine)
1/3 tsp potassium-based salt substitute
2 L (Qt) water

A little off-topic but my MTB has room for only 1 bottle on the inside of the triangle, I'd like to consider a "under-frame" bottle cage or mount but I don't know of any. Any ideas?

Do you have a neurotic issue that causes you to wash your hands repeatedly and your car daily?

Given unlimited time, I'd just walk everywhere. I'd be in great shape and it would be a lot cheaper.
