My panniers got stuck in my spokes today
I have been using Nashbar ATB panniers with a Nashbar rear rack. Things have been fine until today when I was riding and one of them got caught in my spokes. I am 100% they were secured correctly with the hooks, bungie and velcro so I don't know what the problem was. But I have decided to ship them back and invest in something better. Daily I need to transport U Lock, bike tools, spare tube and mini pump. Some days I have to carry a laptop and clothes. Some days I do some grocery shopping. I want one solution to do it all. I was looking at the Topeak trunk bag with the fold up panniers being discussed in another thread. That seems like a good option as the trunk would carry most of my daily needs and I can just deploy the panniers as needed. Is there anything else I should look at in the under $100 range?

It's happened to me a couple of times before. It usually comes down to hitting an obstacle with too much speed with too much stuff in the bags and having a rack without really good pannier support, particularly at the inside rear of the panniers. What rack are you using?

The only other thing I can think of in the under $100 price range are the ones that I just purchased by Koki - the Bagatelle cycling Pannier Bag. If you think that those may be too long for you, check out the Koki Bagaboo Canvas Cycling Pannier Bag, as they seem to be a little wider and not as long.

All have failed over time.........stitching comes apart......clamps to rack fail.....etc.......plastic/waterproofing fails....all of it over time, IMO.
Buy german........ortlieb or racktime......or arkel......

I had that happen with a Transit pannier, hit a bump and the bungee hook got caught in the spokes and came off. I replaced it with Avenir saddlebags. They use a similar bungee / hook mechanism, but by virtue of them being saddlebags, the weight is nicely supported on the rack instead of depending on those hooks to hold them to the side. The only drawback is that they are more difficult to take off and carry with you when you are running errands, going in and out of stores.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I usually only take them on and off at home. If I'm shopping I leave them on and put my shopping bags in them. At work I park my bike in my cube so no need to take them off there.
