Good mirror for a flat bar bike?

What's a good mirror option for flat bar bike that's not a barend?

Take a Look.

Been using mine for a long, long time now. If it breaks today, I'd be getting another one to replace it before my next ride.

Search Amazon for 'bicycle mirror'. Here's just one of many results- http://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Bicycl...ef=pd_sbs_sg_4

I've been using the Blackburn Mountain Mirror for 15 years or so. Easy on/off and not as convex as many mirrors, for a less-distorted view of the world.

I, too, am shopping for a mirror for my flat-bar MTB. I am currently using a plastic one that I found on the street, but it's made of blurry plastic and it bounces around too much. I don't know if I'd be comfortable wearing a clip-on on my helmet, as the thought of all that metal and glass going through my eye and into my brain during a crash kind of turns me off.

Let me know if you find a solution?

I have a few flat bar Mirrycles (sp). They might be the ultimate rear-view mirror. They are the go-to mirror for most recumbent bikes and trikes these days. Good thing, they don't have any competition in that market. I am also using a Blackburn Mountain mirror. As a previous poster said, easy on, easy off. Mine never comes off, however. If I were buying a mirror tomorrow I'd probably take a hard look at the Cycleaware "Urbie". FWIW. You should, BTW, really re-think your helmet mirror aversion. Helmet mirrors are awesome. The one I use is by Efficient Velo Tools. The mirror is 2.25" in diameter. Nice. The shaft is plastic. Not that it matters. In a crash, none of it is going in your eye. Trust me on this. I have to tell you though... I've been riding a few decades before helmets were invented. When they became the hot thing I resisted them because I had done pretty well without them. Five years ago we moved to Oregon and joined a bike club. They insisted on helmets so we got some for our tandem rides. I found out that my helmet, not much use otherwise, made a groovy place to mount a helmet. Five years later and neither helmet has as much as a scratch! We've been down on the tandem at speed twice in five years and I have been down twice while riding on my own. Not so much as a scratch on either helmet. If you are ever in a crash bad enough to send foreign matter into your brain it's not going to matter one wit whether its your helmet mirror or not. You will be dead, or worse with or without the mirror in the mix. Do you hear what I am telling you?

I use this Cateye, but mount it so it is below the bar level. Works better than any of the others for me.

Maybe a little off topic, but something I ran into myself while playing with mirrors. Bar end mirrors can give an unobstructed view of the road behind you. Mount a mirror further inwards and you can easily get an unobstructed view of your forearm or your chest. Inboard mounted motorcycle style mirrors get around that to some extent by using long, heavy steel arms to stick them back out close to the barends. Motorcycle bars are steel and can handle the required clamping forces. Bicycles not so much.

Mine's great, I don't like riding a bike without one.

Wow! I haven't seen a single negative review of this mirror so far. I'm sold!

the Mirrycle mirror is also what i have on my commuter. its fantastic. gives me a very clear and pretty large view behind me. easy to attach to the end of the bar.
here it is on a saturday bike ride

i attached it to go down instead of up so it wouldn't be in the way when i went to grab my bar ends.

It really is a great product. No ride for me is complete without banging the mirror against something at least once, and I still haven't managed to break it.

:roflmao2:so true. it makes getting the bike through a doorway ever more intimate, that's for sure (we live in an apartment and keep our bikes inside).
but i also usually bang it on the bike rack as i am lifting it up to put the bike on.

haven't had to readjust it though!

I use a Mirrycle on my recumbent trike.

Not sure I'd put one on my folder or any other actual flat bar bike, just because of how much it'd stick out, but it works amazingly well on the trike.

Quite a few people are recommending bar-end mirrors. The OP was asking for recommendations of mirrors that don't mount on the bar-end. I think the thread title should've included that information.

Im not sure what I use, CATEYE or something, but I would definitely suggest trying to find real glass instead of plastic lens.
I wrap a shoelace around the stem to kill the vibration, too. It works . . .really ! :thumb:

Most of us are recommending a mirror that we use as a bar end mirror that can be mounted elsewhere like this: http://www.calhouncycle.com/productcart/pc/Evo-Mirror-9p7.htm
- same mirror but with a different mounting.
