Are you a MAMIL?

MAMIL = Middle Aged Man In Lycra (BBC News article)

I'd rather get rid of my stress by biking than with a foreign sports car or an affair although I wouldn't turn down an affair with a Maserati!

Yeah Baby!

My wife calls it my "gay bike suit" (disclaimer-neither of us is homophobic) I tell her it could be worse, my mid life crisis could be a 'Vette.

I'm not really in a lycra suit---Nike dry fit white shirt and PI shorts in summer; UA with the same dry-fit shirts over it in winter, plus UA or New Balance leggings. PI jacket unless real cold, then I wear an MTB Jacket as well.

It's all about stripping away heat while not getting too cold.

Getting there...I'm inches away from turning 40, and just recently I commented to my wife that it's time for my mid-life crisis. I'm not wealthy enough for a Corvette, but a nice carbon-fiber bike and full lycra kit may yet be in the offing!

What does this have to do with bike commuting? Weekend warrior road riding or touring folks may find this interesting.

Most of my riding is done to commute. I used to scoff at the "posers" in Spandex, then I finally tried it. In my case it has nothing to do with fashion. That s#!% is comfortable.

People who ride their bike to work are by definition not poseurs, no matter how they are dressed. They are actual bike commuters. I wear lycra because it is comfortable and designed for bike riding.

Not unless/until it is very, very, very, cold in a very hot place. (When H**l freezes over)
Certain things just don't happen in my corner of the 'verse, and me wearing spandex/lycra, a speedo, and or ankle socks is one of those things. Actually, I guess that is three things.

I got a pugsley when I turned 40. Just bought it right before the estimate came for the new furnace, whew. My wife wanted an Audi TT for 40, but our savings have been lagging on that.

I wear a cycling jersey and padded lycra shorts but wear overshorts over the top, primarily for humanitarian reasons.

I wear lycra or skin tight spandex shorts hidden underneath my cargo shorts or other normal pants... There's absolutly no need to put your junk on public display when walking into a grocery store, bank or a restaurant.

No offence intended. I was referencing the attitude I had before I discovered this stuff.

Yep, that's me too. 63 this year so for sure not middle aged! Although, commuting wise, I wear lycra shorts under my baggy (mountain bike) shorts so as not to distress folks while I'm on the Metro train. I wear a T-Shirt on top, so (only when I'm commuting) I'm kind of a closet OMIL.

I guess that makes me a COMIL (Closet Old Man In Lycra).
