PSA: new Surly bike on the way

This just showed up on my facebook feed: the Surly Straggler. It's not on Surly's website yet. Someone in the comments called it "monstercross and gravel grinder." It looks sort of like a disc brake cross check. Anyways, I'm not in the market, but it looks like it will fit into the commuting forum nicely!

I've seen lots of people asking for a disc brake Cross Check so I think this was inevitable

N+1 time!

I saw that too, love the color. My latest quest is a cyclocross frame with disc tabs to build up for a gravel grinder, second commuter. Looking at the the All City Macho Man disc, but the Straggler will be in the running too.

I do remember a post by someone from Surly, where they've said there will never be discs equipped Crosscheck. Almost true

I can't wait to see the geometry. If it really is a Cross Check with discs then it won't be very well designed for a gravel grinder. If it's more like a Vaya or a utility-oriented Warbird then they might have something.

It looks an awful lot like a Cross Check with discs.

Heres to hoping the same. I would rather it have a more road oriented geometry than cyclocross. I love the color. I just want a disc brake bike with road geometry that I can run Rock and Road tires on without fenders and 32c tires with fenders.

Looks fun, but I hope that's not their only color.

Google throws up this as the bike in question.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3775/9...ee613c8c_o.jpg

which is probably incorrect because the cables run on top of the top tube, instead of underneath it - as in the first photo with decals.

Interesting frame set to throw in the mix for N+1, however, pretty similar to my 2010 Origin8 CX700, probably 2nd most ridden bicycle of mine........

That color I like. Reminds me of one of the older Big Buzzes.

what kind of a name for a bike is "Straggler"? Might as well call it the "Last place" or 'Slow-poke".

I agree, that seems like an odd name for a racing bike! I thought maybe it was a sort of play on words since it took them so long to come out with a disc-brake cross bike.

Actually, I was hoping for the opposite. I had a Cross Check for a few years and could never reconcile myself to the geometry. I was hoping for something with more head tube.

I just got a new Cross-Check and was thinking I might replace the front fork with the Disc Trucker model.

I knew this was going to happen!

That would fit in the stable nicely. Exactly in the middle between my mtb and my roadie. The disc brakes would make descents fun and the drops provide comfort. Put on some slicks and you have an awesome commuter/tourer.

What geometry changes would you want to see in a bike made specifically for gravel riding?

A taller head tube relative to the top tube.

I look at a taller head tube as being more of a visual difference rather than a functional one assuming that the fork comes with a decent amount of steerer tube. You can just leave it uncut and use spacers to get your preferred height. The problem with having a really tall head tube is that some people can't get their bars low enough depending on their own fit. I would say that the geometry differences between the Crosscheck, Vaya and Warbird that would have the biggest effect is the BB Drop, Chainstay Length and Fork Rake.

Bike model names and colors are of little concern to the serious bike rider. Get over it.

Or "Le lanterne rouge," although it wouldn't be long before somebody modified the decal to say "Strangler."
